Again, arguing that Cortana is a bad design is separate from arguing Halo 4 Cortana is uniquely bad. 4tana is a very realistic/naturalistic take on “naked blue woman AI” which fits with Halo 4’s general ethos of trying to take the universe more seriously and really asking who these characters are. This is what a naked blue woman looks like, she has toes and a navel, she’s an uploaded human being and not a brand mascot. Whether it succeeds at that you can argue for many pages of posts but I think it does and I absolutely think Steve Downes and Jen Taylor steal the whole game after two Bungie titles they were barely even in.

I think 343 were a bit salty that it didn't take off considering how the opening act of Halo 5 only makes sense if you played Spartan Ops AND read the tie in comic to explain why Halsey is suddenly setting up the Elites after she wanted payback at the end of Season 1. But the Season 1 cutscenes are good. Roland is voiced by Sole Survivor from Fallout 4 which makes me laugh and Lasky and Palmer have some good banter. Then you have nerdy scientist being an idiot and Halsey being a mad scientist and it's just fun pulpy schlock.

Cortana is a real person. She has real motivations, and thoughts. She's a sentient being. And she lives on a military ship, operating with military personnel, and caring about what they think of her. You think that woman is going to choose to appear like that? "That is what a blue woman looks like" is irrelevant if that woman has agency to dress herself as she pleases. Can you give me a reason why other AIs should get to choose clothes but Cortana doesn't?

IDK man "Halo 4 cortana is highly flawed but her design sucks because most of it was an issue in the last game, the changes they made specifically in 4 aren't that bad" just doesn't really mean a whole lot to me. Especially when they're clearly willing to redesign and retcon a ton of other things about the series, like Chief and the covenant, you don't really get that as an excuse. They could change Cortana if they wanted. Especially especially when again she looked so different in Halo 1. They've already canonically changed her appearance before, you can do it again.

I thought it was really dumb how the Chief wakes up and his armour, the cryo pod/bay and entire back end of the Forward Unto Dawn are completely different like not just "oh the graphics are more advanced now" just totally changed without reason I get wanting to give the Chief new armour but couldn't they have just set him up with a new suit when he meets the Infinity?

The changes between 2 and 3 were extremely minor, in 4 he wakes up with an entirely new suit without explanation; like I said it's not just the kind of update you'd expect from graphical updates like between the second and third games.

I'm with Tighclops though, 2 to 3 were more like a change of rendering, only minor stylistic changes but to the same spirit, where in 4 its clearly an entirely different design. I thought the suit switch in 4 was goofy considering he was supposed to be in cryo, but honestly the least of my complaints about 4

Initially it was supposed to be that Cortana had spent the four years Chief was in cryosleep completely redesigning his armour using nanomachines. Then someone said "wait how exactly would that work when they're on a barely functional shipwreck?" so it was just tossed out and they said "it's an art style change." But they muddied the waters because the script still has Chief comment on his armor updates saying "You've been busy" after Cortana says she updated his operating system. And then they made it even more confusing with the whole intro cutscene that has nothing to do with Halo 4 at all.

Cortana in lore is literally based off of Halsey, the only maternal figure John ever had. There's a GDC talk where a Halo 4 lead says he based a lot of Cortana off of dealing with his mother's dementia. Then the art department made her.... um... But really Halo CE and 2 are kind of fine? Sure she's not military in appearance but her whole thing is she's this new advanced non-military AI- and at that point she was the only AI we knew. In 2 she obviously got an update but she's never front and centre so its not really gratuitous? And she's still active throughout the story. Its 3 that turns her from a capable sidekick into a literal tentacle porn rape victim who just needs saving by the big green virgin. And then 4...

Ahem excuse me those are Strident Class Frigates. In Amber Clad was a Stalwart Class. It's almost like you've never read a Halo book before so I doubt you'd understand the nuances of a story like Spartan Ops. Casuals go back to multiplayer and leave the multiplayer campaign to the real fans.

I still maintain that cutscene should've had some Covenant ship shoot the, well, frigate-sized giant holes in the hull of Infinity and snap it in half. Put a laugh track in there, maybe a comedy record scratch noise as it blows apart? That'd be the good stuff right there.

343 explicitly wanted Halo to be the new Star Wars when they took over. Its funny how they ended up preempting the actual new Star Wars in largely misfiring on what people liked about the originals and burying context for the plot to make any sense in ancillary materials.

I've been playing Spartan Ops and am half way through. Wow. These sure are the same five maps ten times. The worst thing about Halo 4 to me is the changed weapon sounds. There's five games of familiarly that's just gone out the window. The plasma pistol is especially bad. Instead of pew-pew-pew-pew vrrrmmmmm. It's clack-clack-clack-clack ffrrrrrrrm. It sounds like an actual gun and not an alien weapon. As for AI chat. Serina and Isabel's have the most boring designs. They look like normal people. Other AI meanwhile are either cosplaying as historical figures like a famous WWII fighter pilot and the Duke of Wellington or a going abstract being a demon skull, an emoticon, and a (I'm not joking about this) box.

These sure are the same five maps ten times. you're actually out of the worst of it, the second half starts varying the maps more and bringing in new and multiplayer maps. there's a sequence on the infinity that's pretty ok. also I had grunt birthday party on, and in one of the in-game cutscenes a marine randomly headshot a grunt, and that brought me much unexpected joy I think the absolute worst sound change is the sword activation. went from the iconic kssshhhhzztt to a lame passshheeewooot

If you aren't playing with people you know, objective game types are just tdm with no kill limit. No one will work together, no one will cover you if youre doing the thing, and the enemy will always be seal team 6 on a team building exercise.
