Our war against free speech cannot end until we silence this bronze beast!

Also the partial vaccination of the population makes it magnitudes riskier in terms of mutation since its the ideal mix of selection pressure and available hosts

If we want to make a dominant variant that's fully vaccine resistant - which we know from experiment is possible - this is the way to do it.

That doesn't become the apocalypse but the gov is still trying to put out the fire with petrol 2 years in and its tiring to hear people buy it again every couple months out of hope

I think we're just gonna have to get used to a bit of plague/lot of plague depending how things shake out

It's becoming more and more apparent that delta is a very very different beast, and that we should be treating this wave with the utmost seriousness. That we don't have nearly enough people vaccinated, that the vaccines are clearly not nearly as effective as they are against wild type, that while infections are high NPIs are the only feasible option to keep it manageable and prevent the health service being overwhelmed. But no, we're just gonna loving YOLO it

E but yeah sure whatever I got DOOMS or whatever the gently caress

I don’t really buy that Delta is significantly different than past variants, just more infectious and coupled with the change of behaviour as people get vaccinated and start to act as though all that bad stuff is behind us is leading to uncontrolled spread.

Edit ^^^ could've sworn I'd read that outcomes tended to be worse too? Because it's able to reproduce so much more quickly than wild type, possibly other reasons too

It's like, vaccines are kevlar, and that's good - great even! - if you're at risk of taking a shot or two

But that doesn't mean it's a good idea to just walk into a loving hail of machine gun fire

Broken record I know but

* Enforced hotel quarantine for all entering the UK
* Enforced stay at home order for at least three weeks
* Enforced mask use for those who need to leave their home
* Once cases are manageable actually properly contact trace/isolate people who test positive

I honestly don't see any way out of this mess without locking down the country for a month and locking down the border until the rest of the world is vaccinated. Every attempt to half arse and mitigate/manage infection rates seems doomed to fail.

On the current topic I am going to have to self isolate for 10 days as my housemate has been told they have it.

My parents were going to be visiting next week as well. They still are coming down but I might not be able to meet up with them if I have caught it.

Fortunately I have been double jabbed, parents have too, and I haven't spent much actual time with my housemate. So here's hoping I am fine.

I agree - it's weird to me that the narrative has shifted from "cases are high, getting higher, almost the very highest, the apps instructions must be followed to protect everyone, it's necessary and important to test, trace, isolate - it's a pandemic dontchaknow" to "oh that drat app pinged me, it's an unnecessary inconvenience to everyone, a joke to smirk about. Can't wait to uninstall it but I guess i probably shouldn't" It's like nobody is bothering to make the connection any more?

I realise that hospitalisations and deaths are way down given the cases, and this is obviously a good thing, so you can kinda get the idea that we can be a bit less immediately concerned maybe? but the disconnect from the app "pinging" people with identified cases is really bothering me.

I mean, I'm assuming that's an entirely deliberately constructed media narrative because it makes the conversation about the app rather than about what people were doing that led to potential exposure and what risk there is for people in pubs, schools, workplaces etc.

Technically great aunt and uncle. Who are retired. And in the masons. Dunno about cool but I do think it's basically the rational choice for anyone left of Ed Miliband. Like the idea that accelerationism is bad is formed around the idea that things would have to get a lot worse & people would suffer. Well, I'd be one of the ones suffering as an unskilled mentally ill mid 30s wastrel & I'm not particularly sure that slowly managed decline is actually less cruel than knocking it all down in the medium to long term.

Welcome to 99% of human history.

The idea that more covid is gonna lead to accelerations or the Tories collapsing or something is profoundly ignorant. We're just have a slightly higher baseline death rate and occasional new strains spread around knocking people down for a week or two. Human society has usually functioned under much higher disease burdens than covid even before vaccination. Even robust border controls in Australia aren'tas effective as previously. This doesn't make reopening when did the right call, but covid is endemic now, and states are going to have to get used to that idea.

Delta is slightly better at spreading through vaccines but not really any different for hospitalizations, its just roll the dice 50000 and you roll alot of 1s.
