Drop Your Nuts

I just came back to the game after a long break, leaving off right after beating arr content. And frankly I have no idea what I should be doing, aside from msq and daily roulette to level.

Should I worry about gear at all at lvl 55? I've only ever worn quest rewards and I have never slotted materia into anything. I got the relic weapon quest, and the idea of even getting a specific weapon with the correct materia in it is daunting.

Just sort of overwhelmed at the abundance of systems. Tomestones? Golden saucer? Beast tribes? I have no clue what I should be doing with my time.

Golden Saucer is worth doing activities in right now because there's a bonus currently ongoing for the special currency it uses (MGP). You're right on the edge of being past the point where tomestone gear is good as far as your level, level 56 gear will outpace 50 Ironworks, so I wouldn't recommend grinding for that.

Beast Tribes are optional and only award things like minions, mounts, and furniture as well as provide vendors for mid level crafting.

You don't ever have to worry about Materia, it's for hardcore raiding, just sell any materia you get from dungeons or spiritbonding. Likewise Relic is strictly for glamour at this point and you don't have to do the optional and lengthy grind for it.

If you're on the free trial I think Ironworks isn't beaten by vendor gear until level 58 (and you need to do all of post-ARR to get to Ishgard and buy it)

Marketboard should have decent stuff though if you have access to that.

If you just use gear from quests, you will always be good enough to roll through the msq until max level.

Tomestones are a currency that you can buy gear with. Until max level, there's only one kind which can be used to buy 50/60/70 gear.

Beast tribes are an optional extra thing for story/mounts/pets/other cosmetics. Don't worry about them unless you want something extra to do.

The Golden Saucer is just a casino to gently caress around in. Nothing in it has any mechanical benefits (aside from the 4 seater car that you can buy during the upcoming ffxv event) but there's a lot of shing cosmetic rewards.

theres vendors in limsa/uldah/gridania wholl sell you gear for tomestones. the gear is higher ilvl than most anything else available to you at level 50 and will carry you all the way to near the end of heavensward. you get tomestones for doing your daily roulettes. when you clear heavensward, there'll be a tomestone vendor in the main city for that expac offering level 60 gear for the same tomestone currency. same with stormblood, its main city, and level 70 gear. the level 80 gear uses a different currency.

the gold saucer is just a bunch of minigames you can do to unlock cosmetic stuff. id definitely recommend goign there and dicking around a bit though, its fun and theres some extremely cheap hairstyles on offer.

I'll be slightly contrary and say that while materia isn't necessary or expected while leveling it is a reasonable use of gil if you like that sort of thing. All the pre-endgame materia can be melded and removed freely: they're not used up like, say, an enchant in world of warcraft.

Getting a small pile of materia IV, V and VIs is I think still relatively cheap for the amount of extra numbers you'll get on every job you ever level. Melding your gear also increases the rate at which you spiritbond your gear, which means you get more extra materia to sell, and when you're done you can sell the materia you used back on the market.

Keeping all your temporary dungeon drops melded all the time is fiddly, melds are ignored whenever their gear is synced down in lvl, and melding costs money & requires visiting an NPC unless you also level your crafters to gear_lvl - 10. All these are reasons why you might reasonably decide not to bother anyhow.

So I recently hit 60 with Warrior, and I've always planned to at least also level a healing class but I'm falling into decision paralysis. I'd prefer a more reactive, involved playstyle rather than one that's rotation based (I'm finding Warrior kind of dull in this way). Is there a clear cut answer among the three?

Another fun quirk is that machinist's Flamethrower ticks every second instead of every three seconds. Which is also not documented that I know of.

Also Flamethrower is one of the game's few rare channeled abilities, which will break if you do *anything*, if you move, turn in place, or use another ability it will just stop.

None of the healers are really rotation based, but Astrologian is easily the most dynamic, as you'll need to respond to each card draw.

None of the healers have a rotation as such. All of them have a single nuke and a single dot as their primary abilities, plus a couple of misc damaging abilities. The differentiation is mostly in their healing and utility toolkit.

WHM is the simple and straightforward option. They have a heal-over-time focus and their spells have more power on average, but they have very few mobility options. What complexity there is tends to revolve around "ok how do I weave for this mechanic".

SCH has more involved resource management plus a pet. Some of their spells build and consume "aetherflow" points, other spells are cast at their pet. They're a little janky right now, and the shield focus generally means their spells are slightly weaker.

AST's central mechanic is drawing and assigning buff cards to other members of their party. Their spells are all quicker to cast to make weaving in cards easier. Currently they can choose between a heal-over-time or a shield stance. Much of their healing is predictive: you can place a heal circle that explodes 20 seconds later, etc.

I'd suggest AST if you want a higher APM and more varied buttons to press, WHM if you want something purely reactive with more powerful single buttons. I can't really recommend SCH over either right now, although some people like it.

Ok cool, AST was my initial gut and it's good to have some confirmation.

AST also has 1.5 second cast times, so you can be more mobile and reactive to things. I find it a lot more fun than WHM, even though it's technically less efficient.

Why didn't anyone tell me bards could busk in the streets and I have been wasting my time not leveling up archer to 30 asap.

the bard performance system is one of the best things to have ever been added to this game, hands down. I never really expected that I would be goofing around at a pool party in the Goblet listening to an octet of bards playing the greatest hits of the 70’s but that is perfectly possible and a fairly regular occurrence in this game. It’s not unusual to see advertisements for several concerts at player-owned music venues on any given weekend.

The thing about materia whole leveling is that it literally has no effect if your gear is synced down. Given that you'll spend most of the game synced, it hardly seems worth bothering with before 80.

So I just started playing the F2P trial again, after creating a character on a server some old friends were on. I saw that the Au Ra were available for character creation, but when I finished the whole process, I saw a message saying that server (Mateus) wasn’t allowing any more characters. Is that just a F2P thing? As in, if I deleted my first character, would I then be allowed to create a new one on the spot, or is new character creation disabled for everyone?

It's for everyone, and it's because of server congestion. They don't allow new characters to be created when there are too many people logged in at once.

So to get on a popular server (or any server lately), you have to make new characters at off hours. It's very silly.

You'll sync down very often, sure, but your gear doesn't do so quite as much. Especially while you level, unless you buy a bunch of crafted stuff. If you're L58 and running the L53 dungeon then your L50 Augmented Ironworks remains unsynced and working as normal, even if your job level will be synced down to L54.

Lower level materia is not a huge deal by any stretch of the imagination, but it's pretty cheap to buy, infinitely reusable and mostly pays for itself with the spiritbond buff. It is also fiddly, especially if you haven't done enough crafting to meld it yourself, and most people will opt to not bother, but it is a reasonable source of numbers if you care about that sort of thing.

no, that element of the hud is locked there. its attached to the hp bar and you cant decouple them. you can hide it or move it offscreen but thatd get rid of the hp bar too.

There's a new one, Menphina's Earring, which is available as a pre-order bonus for Endwalker. But as for the Shadowbringers one, no, that one is unobtainable if you never pre-ordered Shadowbringers as far as I'm aware.
