Idk if it was this thread or another that recommended the People's History of Ideas Podcast but I really like the soundbite used in the opening episode of Malcolm X saying "China got rid of their Uncle Toms".

Yeah it whips. It wasn’t true sadly, but through it you can see how communist China influenced Malcolm X

On the other hand the same is true for the EU in a lot of ways. The main governments except maybe Germany have pretty low public legitimacy and Merkel is retiring. If anything I wouldn't be surprised if EU pols would cling even more to the transatlantic support structures than in earlier times.

They'll maintain those structures so long as they don't interfere with their continental aspirations, like the Russian pipeline.

all "terrorist" designations are arbitrary anyway, and militant organizations should be treated as combatants in every circumstance.

It's crazy how much the diaspora backs the PTI though. Imran Khan is basically a populist but only in regards to the upper middle class if that makes sense.

The only people I have had trouble understanding are some Sindhi family friends we have.

Has this thread discussed how during the ceremony the order of Taiwan in the opening ceremony was done as if their name was "Taiwan" instead of the official name of Chinese Taipei for the Olympic team?

Apparently Tencent also temporarily cut off live coverage in order to not show that, but kept it off too long and cut off China's entrance as well?

Yeah, I don't know why the PRC would have a problem with Taiwanese athletes walking in as Chinese Taipei, if anything that was the entire reason was to "resolve" the issue without acknowledging the ROC or an independent Taiwan.

I guess the idea is they just hate athletes from particularly that island?

In this case it's because Taiwan was ordered as "Taiwan" in the ceremony.

The order of countries is done in the alphabetic/syllabic order of the host country, which in the case of Japan is the Gojūon.

Taiwan was placed in that order as if they were "Taiwan" instead of "Chinese Taipei", i.e. they were placed between South Korea and Tajikistan:

South Korea - 韓民国 "Daikanminkoku" > Taiwan/Chinese Taipei - 湾 "Taiwan" > Taijikistan - ジキスタン "Tajikisutan"

If they were Chinese Taipei (チャイニーズ・タイペイ "Chainiizu Taipei") they'd be in a different spot.

So it's a subtle way of calling them Taiwan instead of Chinese Taipei without doing it too openly... maybe. The NHK announcers also referred to them as Taiwan.
