Classic Kevin & Kell in: welp we're done with that storyline I guess  (September 9-15, 2002)

OK, I know trying to make sense of the worldbuilding in Kevin and Kell is a fool's errand, and that it's just a throwaway joke, but...

Yes, we do despise rabbits in Australia. Because they're an introduced pest. In the K&K world, where there are no humans, how does that work? Were they forcibly deported there by a third party? Or are they the equivalent of settler-colonists in this world, having settled Australia themselves? In that case, they shouldn't be despised by Australians, they should be the Australians, with the indigenous species marginalized and ignored.

Just... if you're going to do a comic where one of the conceits is that the animal world is superior to the human world, don't just causally imply that sapient animals commit the same ecological crimes as humans, in addition to all the other ethical hellscape aspects of their world!

Only listened to the first so far, but surprised that in the defense of Cathy she doesn't mention Guisewite's sometimes explicit social commentary about things like the fashion and diet industries. Loftus puts a lot of effort into making the point that Cathy isn't a vapid shallow caricature, but doesn't use the killer observation that from time to time Guisewite makes it very explicit that Cathy is the victim, not the problem, and is even aware of the issues and trying to escape the traps.

Loftus has said she's going to do an entire episode later in the series about Cathy's relationship with diet, weight, and body image. She's going impressively deep and thorough, and like in her Lolita podcast, the first episode is sort of a broad-strokes picture of the subject matter and the ones that follow focus in on particular aspects of the work.

If anyone in this thread isn't already listening to this podcast, I'd really highly recommend it - last night, I listened to a recent one in which the history of women (both as depictions and creators) in newspaper comic strips is explored, and a lot of thread favorites are discussed: Brenda Starr, Patty-Jo and Ginger, Mopsy, Gay and Her Gang, early Blondie, etc.

"Getting into government with the capitalists...": the government in the summer of 1995 is blue-red coalition of the Social Democratic Party with grudging support from further left and the center-right National Coalition Party along with the centrist Swedish People's Party.

YYA Treaty (Ystävyys-, yhteistyö- ja avunantosopimus, Agreement of Friendship, Cooperationa and Mutual Assistance) was a treaty signed between Finland and Soviet Union after WWII that formed the basis of Finno-Soviet relations until the end of Soviet Union. In it, Finland was required to resist invasion by Germany and it's allies (meaning US and it's allies) and to request aid from Soviet Union if needed in such an event. While Finland was officially a neutral country outside the later Warsaw Pact, the resulting foreign policy doctrine lead to Finlandization.

ECU was the precursor of Euro.

"Everything's getting cut... except Hornets...": in the late 80's Finnish Defense Ministry started looking for a new fighter for the Finnish Air Force. In 1992 acquisition of 64 F/A-18 Hornets from the US was finalized, drawing criticism due to the 90's recession. History repeats itself, in the middle of the current troubles Finland is again shopping for a new fighter.

But seeing how she uses her first year psych knowledge to pick at her friends' insecurities and tear them down, it's obvious she would not respond well to a gentle suggestion she seek counselling. I can absolutely see Bernice taking the approach of "I'm not crazy! Therapy is for crazy people! I'm a psychologist, so I'm not crazy!
