With the absolutely massive caveat that my experience is in indie game development, not indie art production:

  • Don't make this plunge unless you can afford to fail. You're starting up a new small business, and something like 90+% of small businesses turn out to not be financially viable. Make sure you understand what your fallback plan is, and make sure that fallback plan is one that you (and your family, if appropriate) are OK with. Do not not have a fallback plan, even if it's "I go live with my parents for the next five years".
  • You're turning a hobby into a job. Recognize that this is also a risky proposition, psychologically speaking. Some people find that being obligated to perform the hobby sucks all the joy out of it. Other people find they still enjoy it, but they then go way too hard in on it, wreck their work/life balance, and burn out. In order to succeed, you need to be sustainable, and that means working a sane amount of hours, and having things to do outside of your art, that will help you relax when you're not working.
  • Turning your art into a job means getting really practical about it. You probably can't afford to make art that doesn't sell, so figure out which market you're pursuing and really laser-focus in on it. Find a niche and exploit it. Speaking of point #1, porn is a lot more reliable than other art types when it comes to making a living. However, in relation to point #2, you also need this niche to be something that you're psychologically able to handle working in. There might be a market for, I dunno, graphic depictions of death or something, but I know I for one wouldn't be able to handle that kind of work.
  • There are a lot of artists out there, which means a lot of competition. Your biggest hurdle is simply getting your art in front of other people. That means you need to get comfortable with self-promotion. You'll need to have a presence on pretty much every social media network. Figure out how the networks work, and remember that they are networks -- you'll get more of a response if you engage with them than if you just use them as hands-off platforms to shout into the void. This is work, and it's work a lot of people don't really enjoy, but nobody's going to buy your art if they don't know who you are.
  • Seriously consider if there are other options available to you between working a lovely service job and going full-time indie. Can you find a job in marketing or graphic design? There must be a list of "jobs that leverage artistic skills" out there that someone with more artistic experience would know about. Such a job would almost certainly pay better than the service industry, and hopefully be more satisfying as well.

EDIT: actually, let's expand on that last one a bit. Know what your alternatives are, and the prones and cons of each. Like, one alternative is that you stick with your lovely service job. The pro here is that it's reliable income, the con is that you hate it and it's gradually burning up your will to live. Another alternative is that you go full-time indie. A third is that you try to break into a different career. These all carry different potential for risks and benefits. This is a good time to really think carefully about what you actually want out of your life. You don't want to spend a huge amount of time and effort trying to accomplish Goal X, then realize at the end of it that you would have rather been shooting for Goal Y instead.

Thanks for this effort post. I'm pretty drat worn out from work this past week, but these are some helpful and salient points to ponder.

Hi all! does anyone have any recommendations for resources on working with colour?

Ive been getting into drawing and I bought myself a graphic tablet which has been pretty cool but im still only working in line and hatching really. I found the book the keys to drawing by bert dodson really helpful because it was split up into simple exercises which built on the previous ones, ideally im looking for something like that except on colouring instead of line drawing. Something that clearly goes through the fundamentals in detail but also has lots of directed exercises instead of 'heres some tips, now go do something on your own'. thinking up my own ideas makes the whole thing even harder :(

I dont mind paying for a book, but free resources are a plus. Something I can read though, I am incapable of learning from videos!

thanks for any ideas!

James Gurney's Color and Light is the best resource I've found. It's broken up into easy sections that take the ideas and put them simply, with lots of examples and explanations. Not really built around exercises, but you can absolutely apply each section to a project and practice that way. He also has a YouTube channel, and while he mainly works in gouache and watercolors, he has videos on colors that can be applied to any medium.

The other one that comes to mind is Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie.

edit: Debunking Color Myths with Tiffanie Mang. Saw this after my post and thought it would also help.

I haven't really thought this through, but does anybody have any places that have networking potential with other creative types focusing on game development? Obviously there's SA which isn't nothing but it's a bit labyrinthian. There's also just flat out paying people on places like fiverr. I'm just wondering if there are any obvious hubs or even discords that I'm missing. Ideally it would be some kind of small discord with like 50 talented people in it looking to collab but it's rare you stumble into that.

SA has several spinoff discords; the two I'm most aware of are Dogpit and Awful Jams.

If you want to collaborate, the usual advice I see is to join game jams. There's usually an associated community with the jam, where you can go to form a team. Dogpit is just about to wrap up a jam right now, so unfortunately you missed the bus on that one.

Compared to lovely run-of-the-mill printing yeah. These are archival inks and papers, so they'll cost more depending on print size and paper choice. I got prints made of a painting on 11x17 paper and it cost me $20/print from a local printer. My local options are fairly limited, and the other (cheaper) printer still hasn't resumed business due to covid.

If your friend's just looking for cheap a print on demand service and doesn't care about the quality of the product the buyer receives, then an intermediate service like redbubble or society6 is probably more than adequate.

I've been working a lot with gouache lately and am interested in sealing my finished work with a varnish of some variety. I live in Louisiana, so it's super humid here and I'm worried about potential damage to my work. Anyone have any experience varnishing watercolor or gouache? I know I'd need to work with an isolation layer before brushing anything on. Aerosols are probably a better overall choice than anything involving brushes, especially for the isolation layer. I read about Dorland's Wax Medium on an artists blog as way of protecting the paint, but it more seems to be used for oil paints. The blog claims it can be applied directly to the surface of a water color painting without damaging the paint. Gouache is a slightly thicker coat in my experience an I have concerns about potentially abrading some the paint off. I know I could easily work with oils or acrylics instead, but I love the workability and totally matte finish of gouache.

I have a self portrait my mom painted in college, around 50x40 inches, and it sat in my basement for years rolled up and squished until recently, and I want to hang it up. I laid it flat for a few weeks and fortunately there were no creases. I have the original frame the canvas was (just rectangular, no diagonal braces) but I figured I should ask for advice from people who know more. I've build frames and stretched fresh canvas before, but I'm mostly used to doing custom projection screens and I'm sure that both are more forgiving than an old canvas. It's almost 50 years old and both the canvas and paint are in good shape and still flexible with no cracking. Can I restretch it like I would a new canvas but more delicately or is this strictly a professional job?

Of course I know I can't ask that and not share a picture of it, so

This was 12-15 years before I was born, so the model in the foreground is a child she was babysitting. Fortunately my family is still in touch with her college roommate and her family, otherwise I wouldn't even have known that she painted it.

edit: there's a bit of basement mold on the canvas in the bottom right corner that fortunately doesn't touch the paint. Is gently wiping with hydrogen peroxide a safe way to get rid of it?

Can anyone recommend me a free drawing tool/shape generator either online of for Mac, that can generate shapes when I give it the specific dimensions.

I have a bunch of trapezoids I need to generate, I know the length of each side and the interior angles on each. I thought this would be quite simple but everything I've tried only lets me set the width and height of the shape, or lets me adjust the angle but non-specifically.

There might be some sort of online vector or CAD tool that would let you specify angles and side lengths, but you could use a tool like this https://www.mathepower.com/en/trapezoid.php to get the dimensions you need from what you have.

It'd be pretty easy to set up an excel sheet with the proper formula if you don't want to enter everything in to the calculator individually.

My sister took a cellphone picture of her kid that she loves, except something went wrong with the lighting I guess, here's a cropped version:

Is this something that could be fixed, and if so, maybe a goon could do it? I'm willing to throw a couple of bucks someone's way if it's a relatively easy fix, but if it would be a lot of work then it's no great loss either. How would I go about this? Is there a dedicated thread for small requests like this?

VelociBacon

Does she still have the kid? Its a thousand times easier to retake the photo at the same time of day in the same room etc. That can be photoshopped (make an SA mart thread offering 40 bucks or so) but it doesn't seem worth it unless they can't take another photo.

Thanks but yeah, that's not worth it. It's a great picture where he has a great laugh and a twinkle in his eyes but otherwise not special. There'll be hundreds more just like it but I figured maybe it's a minute or two fix for someone that knows what they're doing. Definitely not worth 40 bucks, though.

Does anyone have any resources for font identification from an old-timey label? I'm reconditioning some old (circa 1930s) lamps and part of that process is recreating the original labels which were damaged beyond repair and got removed with the paint. I'm counting at least three fonts here but I have no idea where to start identifying what they are or close-enough analogues.

Maybe not so little a question, but is there a good resource/tactic for finding literary agents/publishers that are interested (or even open to) novellas?

I have a completed work that's just under the 50k word mark and it seems that most agents start at works that are half-again that long.

I looked at similar genre books and who made those for this. Like if your thing is military sci-fi, find someone that imprints that and see if they have a contact form or a submission form. Also check us out in the self publishing thread. I have one publisher that I’m going to give the first crack at my novel(but I know the guy) and then a reach publisher/international rights one.

Okay, so you know those EKG heartbeat lines, and how the same effect can be used for like... audio levels

like a solid line until audio goes up and then it spikes and goes back down

does anyone know of a program that can do that, specifically one that could be easily livestreamed? That's just a bullshit word.
I have a question about perspective.

Will the horizon line/eye-level line that we place on the page change at all if we position the camera or viewpoint higher or lower? If we angle the camera upwards or downwards, the horizon line will shift down or up the page respectively, but what about height? Intuition tells me yes but in practice I don't think that's the case at all, which can throw me off sometimes.

At extreme heights, will the horizon line still move downwards because of the curvature of the earth? Like, if we observed a camera from a space shuttle being launched, after enough time the horizon line will eventually shift off the page, right?

Not really. The horizon line is an imaginary plane/line that things appear to be above or below of. It's always centered on your field of view. Basically, look around at any object. Things will appear to recede from the center of your vision. Now crouch down or stand up and notice how the vanishing points change as your perspective change. It's better to think about vanishing points rather than the horizon line. Because you can have a perspective where there is no "horizon" and still have a horizon line. It's a point where things recede and become unrecognizable, it doesn't have to be actual ground or anything tangible.

armorer
Aug 6, 2012

I like metal.
If the camera has a fixed angle with respect to a line drawn through the center of the globe, then yes, as it ascends the horizon line will get lower on the page.

That's your example at any rate - a camera looking perpendicular to the body of a rocketship taking a (unrealistic) straight shot straight up from the surface of the earth. Eventually the horizon will no longer be in the frame.

On a smaller scale, such as standing up from sitting, any such effect is irrelevant. Also our natural view isn't a fixed angle like that.

Edit: to the above poster's point, yes 100%. The horizon line and the vanishing point are only inherently related if you are looking at (or near enough in relative terms) the horizon!

If you lie on your back and stare up at a skyscraper, the vanishing point has nothing to do with the horizon, for example.

If you get to extreme enough heights I tend to move to three point perspective. The Horizon line tends to just be the line drawn between your two vanishing points. I consider it a more a convenient verbal shorthand than a concrete idea a lot of the time.
