oh, definitely. the only actual work they do is being sneeringly evil and/or running starbases. so, pretty similar to modern militaries.

If anything was non-officer it'd make sense that there might be a whole new setup around noncom scientists who aren't really there to advance far in starfleet or be all quasi-military but are there to work in the ship's astro-herpatology department or whatever. A whole bunch people of specialist rank.

I remember them running across an exploded Oberth that was apparently a civilian science ship.

I actually enjoyed season one for what that’s worth. This one is hella Videogame plot and the whole “sprint from plot point to plot point” thing has gotten a lot more noticeable just as said plot points got a bit more nonsensical and stupid.

The whole funeral bit for the cyborg lady was loving laughable. I had hoped for more development of the bridge crew and the lack of it was so noticeable that I, a total dipshit, called her dying as soon as we heard her speaking nongeneric bridge patter dialogue.

It could really use less devotion to overarching story arcs. A few episodic oneoffs would be nice to let the characters breathe a little. As it stands now Michael, Tilly and Stamets are the only ones with any real character development at all. Detmer and Owo are cool, I’d like to see more of them. The mention of Owo being from a Luddite colony could make for some fun

So, there was a lot more to Whalen in earlier drafts of season one, that got cut. Which always hurts, but season one's budget was, you know. [laughs] It wouldn't have been an issue down the track, that's for sure, and I brought it up a couple of times in the room but the tone just had... evolved since then. See, his origin story was that he was a genetic... resurrection, really... by whale scientists, of the ancient Roman physician Galen. Whales, plus Galen, Whalen. [laughs] I love ancient history, you see, and it started out as a bit of a joke to be honest, but, we were trying to break stories about the whole whale thing. Gene was very keen at the time on 'cetacean ops' as being part of the ship with whale crew members, the whole nine yards, so we were... trying to figure out what does that mean to the world. What kinds of things would whales be interested in and what would they do? But that whole whale thing was far too expensive, so it never really got off the ground, even though we tried to a number of times. So he was an experiment by the whales, and he'd learn about the future as kind of a way to, explain future technology, that sort of thing, and he'd become fascinated by the 20th century because thats where the whales came from in Star Trek IV and that's what would lead into "The Last Goodbye", where he'd follow his growing obsession with the 20th century to... his doom, getting shot by gangsters, the 20th century still somehow hurting whales in the 24th.

But the whole 'ancient person walks around the ship' was done a few times anyway. We made DeForest look ancient and he was already a doctor, so. So the Whalen you see in the show was really, what was left of that. It won a Peabody, so, it worked out okay. That's TV writing.

I basically picked EPs I liked the sound of from the Netflix description upto about S3 at which point I became more and more keen on it and then started watching more or less in order, and also going back to fill in some episodes too.

I think it's only the later series where the order might confuse stuff.

I didn't watch the first episode first.. but that'd probably be worth doing tbh because it does set up alot!
