[Senator Collins:] It’s a great pleasure, thank you.

[Interviewer:] This Tesla Megapack that was involved in the incident in Moorabool this week…

[Senator Collins:] Yeah, the one on fire?

[Interviewer:] Yeah

[Senator Collins:] That’s not very typical, I’d like to make that point.

[Interviewer:] Well, how is it untypical?

[Senator Collins:] Well, there are a lot of these battery packs being built around the world all the time, and very seldom does anything like this happen … I just don’t want people thinking that Tesla Megabatteries aren’t safe.

[Interviewer:] Was this battery safe?

[Senator Collins:] Well I was thinking more about the other ones…

[Interviewer:] The ones that are safe,,,

[Senator Collins:] Yeah,,, the ones aren't on fire.

[Interviewer:] Well, if this wasn’t safe, why did it have 80,000 MAmps of electricity in it?

[Senator Collins:] Well, I’m not saying it wasn’t safe, it’s just perhaps not quite as safe as some of the other ones.

[Interviewer:] Why?

[Senator Collins:] Well, some of them are built so they don't catch fire at all.

[Interviewer:] Wasn’t this built so it wouldn't catch fire?

[Senator Collins:] Well, obviously not.

[Interviewer:] “How do you know?”

[Senator Collins:] Well, ‘cause it caught fire, and 20,000 square meters of brush land caught fire. It’s a bit of a give-away.” I would just like to make the point that that is not normal.

[Interviewer:] Well, what sort of standards are these batteries built to?

[Senator Collins:] Oh, very rigorous … electrical engineering standards.

[Interviewer:] What sort of things?

[Senator Collins:] Well it's not supposed to catch fire, for a start.

[Interviewer:] And what other things?

[Senator Collins:] Well, there are … regulations governing the materials they can be made of

[Interviewer:] What materials?

[Senator Collins:] Well, Aluminium Foams’s out

[Interviewer:] And?

[Senator Collins:] …No combustible aluminium derivatives…

[Interviewer:] Like combustible aluminium cladding?

[Senator Collins:]. … No combustible aluminium cladding, no aluminium foam, no plates of aluminium. …

[Interviewer:] Magnesium?

[Senator Collins:] No, magnesium’s out .. Um, They’ve got to have a fire alarm. There’s a minimum fire suppression crew requirement.”

[Interviewer:] What’s the minimum crew?

[Senator Collins:] Oh,… one, I suppose.

[Interviewer:] So, the allegations that they are just designed to be built as quickly as possible to milk taxpayers and to hell with the consequences, I mean that’s ludicrous…

[Senator Collins:] Ludicrous, absolutely ludicrous. These are very, very strong batteries

[Interviewer:] So what happened in this case?

[Senator Collins:] Well, it caught on fire in this case by all means, but that’s very unusual.

[Interviewer:] But Senator Collins, why did it catch fire?

[Senator Collins:] Well, a droplet hit it.

[Interviewer:] A droplet hit it?

[Senator Collins:] A rain droplet hit the battery.

[Interviewer:] Is that unusual?

[Senator Collins:] Oh, yeah… In Victoria? …Chance in a million.

[Interviewer:] So what do you do to protect the environment in cases like this?

[Senator Collins:] Well, the battery was built outside the environment.

[Interviewer:] Into another environment….

[Senator Collins:] No, no, no. it’s been built beyond the environment, it’s not in the environment

[Interviewer:] Yeah, but from one environment to another environment.

[Senator Collins:] No, it’s beyond the environment, it’s not in an environment. It has been built beyond the environment.

[Interviewer:] Well, what’s out there?

[Senator Collins:] Nothing’s out there…

[Interviewer:] Well there must be something out there

[Senator Collins:] There is nothing out there… all there is …. is brush land …and birds ….and mammals

[Interviewer:] And?

[Senator Collins:] And 20,000 tons of Bolivian lithium

[Interviewer:] And what else?

[Senator Collins:] And a fire

[Interviewer:] And anything else?

[Senator Collins:] And the part of the battery that caught on fire, but there’s nothing else out there.

[Interviewer:] Senator Collins thanks for joining us.

[Senator Collins:] It’s a complete void

[Interviewer:] Yeah, We’re out time

[Senator Collins:] The environment’s perfectly safe. …. We’re out of time?.. Can you book me a cab?

[Interviewer:] But didn’t you come in a Tesla?

[Senator Collins:] Yes, I did, but

[Interviewer:] What happened?

[Senator Collins:] Caught on fire

Fun Shoe
excerpts from the new Tesla book coming out next week are hitting the stands:

quote:

As they pushed toward the end of the quarter, it became clear that the team had failed to anticipate how many trucks it would require to deliver an ever-increasing volume of cars to delivery centers that would then distribute them to customers. Third-party car carriers didn’t have enough space for them. Managers, with little automotive industry experience, had just assumed they could keep upping and upping their shipments as cars rolled off the line.

During one nightly call, a manager who had recently been hired as head of customer experience and operations spoke up. She’d spent years overseeing supply chains for the Army National Guard and joined Tesla from Walmart Inc. She was deeply experienced in operations, and looking at the numbers, she had bad news for Mr. Musk: The company couldn’t meet his goal of 100,000 deliveries this quarter. They were on pace for around 80,000

Mr. Musk didn’t accept that. He said he needed those deliveries to occur. Within days the manager was ousted. Mr. Musk told the nightly conference call of sales leaders that it wasn’t because she wasn’t enough of a sycophant, but was rather about her “fundamental inability to perform.” In reality, she had given him an answer he didn’t want to hear. He wanted to hear: We’ll do our best. The managers had been conditioned against telling him the unvarnished truth.

I'm very curious if this will have the same effect as the Theranos book once all of the madness is made clear (and once journalists can just quote the book/interview its author, which is much easier for them than doing the actual investigative reporting they have abandoned).
