for a long time the implicit bargain between capital and the PMC/computer toucher classes was “we’ll treat you better than the proles but don’t get any funny ideas about labor power.” but now the first part of that bargain is falling apart (see the proposed salary cuts for remote workers) and so the second part is looking sketchy as well.

The only reason this couldn’t happen where I work is because management will never have a plan to accidentally send us. Otherwise, completely believable.

Without going into many details about how everything went, my company's CEO who's made banks on the back of the labor here over the years and the parent company that bought us out a couple years ago?

They'd rather let the company fold completely and go out of business than give us an extra buck an hour. We have low overhead and own our facilities. We have over 500 employed people if you include our half dozen or so on site customers.

Strike ended after a couple weeks because people that voted to strike couldn't last more than that financially. But the company would have probably just let it burn if we had stayed out anyway.

Typical story of capital fighting labor, no matter how much profit they make, if we try to get anything more for ourselves, they'd rather have nothing.

my brother doesn't want to join a union because they have "an unrealistic and unproductive stance on international competitiveness" and I just ... I can't articulate a response.

This in the same conversation where he mentions their CEO pretty much stated that they want to close down 20 of their 80-100 ish production facilities.

the US already has higher wages than most other countries, there will always be a country with cheaper labor. there's no way for the US to "compete" on underpaying our workers

just ask him, when (not if) the CEO offshores 20-25% of the facilities, does he want a contract or not

It can be helpful to try and engage him on specific local complaints he may have or be aware of. Scheduling, overtime, a jerk supervisor, poo poo like that.

Something that feels more real than the vague idea of international competitiveness.

I will try to write up what happened with the Danish Nurses Strike

Since the late 1960s, Denmark has a weird balance where there's no legally defined minimum wage, but workers and assholes make it work. It usually works, except when you're employed by the state in a traditionally female job. Basically in the 1960s, a bunch of dudes ranked jobs on a scale of how likely it was that there was a second income

the nurses union has been calling to get aligned up to teachers for years now, but theres never any money (except for paying mandated overtime which is a different account i guess?)

so:

- danish nurses just had a 10 week strike
- they were offered a 5% raise over 3 years + "a comission to look into wage inequality"
- they voted no, 66% against
- the nominally "social democrat" party sadly flinched to the right and is now turning the garbage offer into law
- we are already 5000 nurses short, this is literally going to destroy the danish health care system

#2 isn't ALWAYS bad...

Labor Day is more than an excuse to gently caress off and grill hamburgers. Never give up the fight, and never compromise on your principles, even when you have to compromise in negotiations. Always remember, there are other goons to talk to. Goons who have been there. Goons who know what it’s like dealing with a bargaining unit who has never opened their contract book. Goons who know what it’s like to spend their free time helping a brother or sister with a problem, work related or not.

And remember, there are two types of people.

yeah tbh i wouldnt call it a raise, that's just maintaining parity with inflation

the nurses have started refusing overtime and extra shifts, and are doing 1 hour spot strikes this week, the latter likely being illegal and the state is bringing a suit to Arbejdsretten (NLRB equivalent)

i guess we'll see what happens
