I played my first scav game and died because the running SUV wasn't my exit, and missed out on a PMC who ran right into me but I was unable to properly aim at and take down due to my single AKS-74U mag being near-empty and my 1-round AKM not being much help (no mag loaded, oops). This is still almost what I always wanted out of DayZ and Division 1 Survival. Will anyone sell me a loving tape measure or did I have to buy the most expensive edition for that? I'm used to using land features in DayZ to orient myself on the map, but are there any keys for Tarkov? Obviously there's MapGenie on another monitor but that doesn't help with where I start. Right now I'm just popping in as a Scav every chance I get to lessen the consequences of dying when I barely know what's going on.

Starting out I typically learned one route on a map and started deviating from that route once I got more comfortable. Woods is really the only map I need to whip out the compass sometimes at the start

I would turn everything off on mapgenie except scav/pmc spawns until you get oriented by noticing landmarks immediately around you and finding them on the map

I prefer loading the maps from the wiki over map genie. Genie scales icons weirdly so you can't see map details if you zoom out to see the whole map. The maps on the wiki will at worst show you the landmarks, and at best will also show all the loot/spawns/details in a scale friendly way.

Is popping Sanitar with a bolty a good strategy or do bosses have super-human vision? I've not hunted bosses before so not really sure of the best way to get them.

Little of Column A, little of Column "Head, Eyes" Sometimes Scav bosses, especially Shturman and Sanitar, will aggro on you from a goodly range and absolutely laserbeam you. Other times, you can sneak up on them and line up a good doink to the head for a safe kill. Definitely treat them like a sniper scav++ and plan accordingly.

I upgraded to eod with the current 15% off, and having used the alpha case for like 18 months, I had no idea what to put in the gamma. I got super used to filling my four slots with "quest key, ammo stack and a cms". First thing I did was buy a lion for docs case barter (100k cheaper, I had everything else) So now I've got 5 slots filled, (same items, just replace the quest key with the docs case). What else do people take into raid in their gamma? Or do I just keep it empty for vendor loot?

Scav gun quality is less about jamming and more about the accuracy debuff it applies. Adds about a foot of bullet spread at 100m.

If I need extra butt hole room for quest items I'll swap the grizzly for a salewa and move the cms to my rig. If I find some really good loot I'll move the heals to my rig. I'm not great at PvP, so I keep my heals in my secure container so I don't burn through them in a night. If I'm somehow holding a surplus of cash I'll carry a hemostat or afaik(sp?) in my pocket for dealing with heavy bleeds in an emergency.

Is the compass bugged somehow? I've loaded it up in one game and had it be my key to survival, then on another session of Customs with a friend I had straight North / zero azimuth be very much... not north?

I think that most of the "jams" on new guns are ammo misfires. Crazy AP ammo seems to have a higher misfire chance than more regular ammo. I haven't seen the misfire chances for each ammo listed anywhere; it might be linked to the durability burn stat.

Found a directors key on a shoreline scav run, so immediately went and did delivery from the past expecting the usual loving-god-dammit-back-to-customs-a-loving-gain runaround. Got it first try so I guess it's time to quit tarkov, I've peaked.
