This is the smallest ship I've been able to reasonably fit the big flagship gun on

It's pretty fun, it's maneuverable and has armor focused on the top corners, since I find that generally being to the bottom left/bottom right of bigger ships is advantageous (lots of weakspots in their armor/engines) - but ultimately I find that this gun is rather hard to aim when you're moving around quickly, it has a much slower rotation speed than others so I don't know that the ship overall is worth it.

They'd both show as ELINT 1, right, or would the latter suddenly jump to like 3? (Or would I magically detect it from 1500km anyway? :v:)

I think I've got the location of this SG about right from ELINT and radio, where the X BASALT is in the middle. Is there any way to get their exact position, or even their composition, without alerting them?

So, my current gameplan has me parking carriers and cruise missile carriers out in the desert, launching strike packages at the baddies, while stripped down transports and corvetts shuttle supplies out to them.

Can't touch this.
I think the trick is not to drive off randomly into the desert but to have your main force be chilling in the desert not burning fuel rather than say on a city not burning fuel. So I like to park on the way to where I was going anyway. I also do like to bring the flag ship in to each fuel depo city, as it is still the biggest gas tank I have, and ferrying the fuel is wasting fuel.

Really the layout of fuel dump cities is the landscape my flagship is navigating on the way to Khiva.

The other thing is you cannot afford to backtrack, that’s why mockingbirds are great, they are cheap enough to go back and use intel points, but, you will still have to buy gas for them, so it’s not free either.

I think you'd just detect it? I'm not terribly sure. It doesn't make sense it would jump straight to 3, since I've never observed that. Remember that your ELINT will detect active radar outside of their range anyway, otherwise your active radar would detect enemies before they used their ELINT to open fire with cruise missiles and nukes.

Missiles and Planes report:
Cruise missiles and aircraft carriers are well balanced, I thought they would be lovely. So many games that have weapons like those always have trouble balancing them - either they crush or they are totally outclassed by something else. I just took out two strike groups for a total loss of 2 aircraft and expending 10 cruise missiles (and a good chunk of maneuvering fuel to get the carriers and missile launchers into position/range, but that's just the cost of doing business.)

Cruise missiles are fairly binary if you can get them on target, but they have just enough hardiness that I only lost a few to enemy CIWS or anti-air missiles. Obviously they have great range, you just have to get them on target. Planes are much the same, the range is great but they absolutely need special ammo - I split between 250mm(?) rockets for the larger planes and 250kg bombs for the smaller ones. Again, they can get hit by CIWS or anti-air missiles but in both sorties they managed to down a large cruiser with bombs. I think crucially I hit both strike groups on the ground - it seems like they have a pretty bad defensive response when they're landed.

All-in-all a pretty expensive proposition between the special plane ammo expended and the number of missiles expended, but crushing 2 strike groups for legit no damage besides two lost planes is pretty insane.

Right, it's just that before I'd assumed a ship appearing at ELINT 1 must be at around 1500km (since that's my ship's ELINT distance). What I didn't realize is that they might be a lot closer than that even at ELINT 1 if their radar is lower power than the 750km one

Limited, hunting them all down is a legit good strategy if you built your fleet around bushwhacking them.

I tried this earlier and it seemed like shots were sneaking through? I could be wrong, it's hard to tell what's going on in all the chaos when you're taking fire.

If you test that design you'll know right away since your ammo boxes are right at the edges :v:

I built an armored brick in the shipworks to mess around with, and it seems like if you have a heavily-armored ship, more maneuverable AI ships will go well out of their way to target weak points in the armor.

In fact, they try too hard, to the point where it can be exploited. They kept trying to squeeze beneath my low-flying brick to get at the weaker bottom armor...only to be sitting ducks for my guns, because they were hugging the ground so much that they could barely maneuver. The smaller and faster the enemy ship, the more likely it was to willingly pin itself between heavy weaponry and a hard place.

I found the ideal AA setup

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0G7mxcLKvU

it has 28 chainguns :ssh:

For real though, this ship is poorly designed w/r/t engines but chaingun spam is the real deal. This ship can beat even groups of 4 Large ships in the ship editor by just facetanking them while firing, with the default HE ship editor ammo (I think chainguns only get incendiary though which may not be any good).

I'm going to redesign it without the big fuel tanks (it can be supported by a cheap 1300 gold tanker or two) so it has a better firing range and maybe more armor/better thruster usage.

I finally succeeded in making a heavier version of the Lightning

It's upgunned to 3 guns (130mm), significantly more nimble and faster than the Lightning (but a bit flimsier than the Lightning, so watch out), and costs under 20k. Much like the Lightning it has zero armor but with 1029km/h speed, 11.4 thrust/weight ratio, 6 maneuvering thrusters, a solid disc shape and a profile not much larger than the Lightning itself it's even easier to get out of harm's way.

7x4 seems to be a strong candidate for brick size, I'm finding that Square bricks get too wobbly and topheavy, and horizontal rectangle bricks are ideal because you can fit in more thrusters relative to total surface area.

You can stick armor on the sides of it and still maintain over 700km/h speed and 7.8 thrust/weight which is comparable to a Lightning but slightly slower but I'm not convinced that side armor is worth dropping speed for - maneuvering up/down to avoid horizontal shots is much easier than horizontal movement to avoid vertical shots. Armor across the top brings it to 734km/h and 8.2 thrust/weight - but at the end of a day with a ship this maneuverable I'd rather keep the maneuverability and use a lot of empty space between me and bullets as my armor :v:

Ultimately this is just paying an extra ~10k for 50% more firepower and trading off reinforced hull pieces for more mobility.

Note: It does not have any flares, escape pods, or sensors (but it does have fuel fire protection and room for 2 flares or escape pods if you want)

If anyone wants it here's the png

and the .seria
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yk5NzlqIgAVIAEbfjlGp9qVjc14B7mPI/view?usp=sharing

e: It has minimal fuel because I always keep a bunch of these bad boys around, which hold fuel equivalent to 20 small fuel tanks while moving really fast and barely using any fuel themselves, and only cost 1650 gold

Is it entirely reinforced hull? I have a design with four 130mm cannons and the same maneuver jets (less fixed engines tho) and it’s almost as fast. Not reinforced however so it’s pretty flimsy. Find I rarely get hit so it doesn’t much matter

Does anyone know what influences the chance of the fire suppression working? There's clearly something inherent to ship design that affects the chance, because it usually works on the stock ships, but literally never ever actually extinguishes fires on my armored brick no matter how many charges I pop.
