I don’t remember what the thread was about, but I remember reading a story in one about ten years ago where someone’s hick relatives gave their Northern European exchange student Tupperware to bring home because they though they came from third world country conditions.

Sure I can't afford to take any vacation days or I won't be able to buy food, and I'm at risk of bankruptcy from an accident, but it's a small price to pay for my clothes to dry slightly faster than if I hung them on the clothesline.

First I don't believe this because getting an in-unit washer dryer was a huge deal when I found my current apartment. He may mean houses (excluding apartments) but that 86% is because we associated clothes lines with poverty and basically made not owning one inside your home illegal. Same for laundromats.

By the same statistics, in Germany about 46% of households have clothes dryers so it's not like they're unheard of either.

Probably dry stuff faster than my 110 volt dryer that needs 2 90 minute cycles to get to 'dry enough whatever' that is in the tiny laundry room in my apartment. I remember when the leasing company that owns my complex put a new coat of paint on all the buildings so they could raise rent by 200$ only to seal everyone's dryer vents in the process.

I dunno the whole continent's ice cube situation but the relative lack of ice is one of the good things in France imo. Like, drinks are already overpriced, why would I want to buy a drink and get a cup that's 90% ice slush?

Also gettin flashbacks to "96% of poor households have a refrigerator" and "these arabs claim to be refugees but have decade old phones" is having access to appliances good or bad?

Depends on the drink and the place, but you don't get north american-style where you pay five times as much for half a can of soda but the cup is vast majority ice.

In Europe you pay three euro for a six ounce glass bottle of coke. In America you pay $1.00 for 32oz with unlimited refills. It is beyond imagining that soda is somehow cheaper in Europe, it's a blatant lie. And what the gently caress just ask for less ice if you don't like ice you cretin.

Would someone in Spain even need a dryer? They’re not very common in Australia because clothes dry outside in like 4 hours even for most of winter.

I think they have dryers, or at least the option to have em - but I gotta hand this one to Josh, the ones I encountered are poo poo. I lived in Ireland for a while and I had an in-unit dryer in my not-that-nice apartment in Dublin. It was so worthless that I bought a drying rack instead and just let my place have a corner dedicated to drying clothes all the time. Complained about it to my local coworkers and they said that’s pretty much how it goes.

No idea why - they have perfectly fine electrical hookups and 230V at every outlet, so it should be totally fine to use an American model with a passive adapter. But that wasn’t what I saw happen!

e: lol wait does he think it’s because they’re too poor

I don’t personally know why the dryers suck, but that’s not gonna be why

I mean here in Finland all the dryers I've encountered have been perfectly serviceable. Including the ones we had when I was a kid. I don't have one now because lol where would I fit it/there is already one in the common washing room but insinuating that Europeans don't have dryers is super bizarre.

Those foolish Brits, trading modern laundry technology for health care.

I'm also confused about his insistence that people in Europe don't have machines that make ice cubes, pretty sure most people have freezers. Those freezers might not have ice makers but who cares? It's not like ice makers are capable of producing infinite ice either, they will eventually run out of ice and you have to wait for it to make more, because no home equipment is capable of instantly freezing water.

Having done both, I think the appeal is not that they dry things faster, it's that throwing crap in the dryer is practically instant while hanging your stuff to line dry takes actual human labour. It's not a lot of labour, but it's more than zero. It's like, tossing your chamber pot's contents wasn't too hard, but I doubt anyone's complaining if their chamber pot gets replaced with a toilet.

Also re: appliances, one that's genuinely mostly US in my experience is garbage disposals in sinks. My ex's family even thought the idea sounded dangerous, like, as if people were fisting the garbage disposal and mangling their hands on the regular.

e: tbf seeing the covid situation it's understandable to imagine a significant portion of the US population shoving their hands into the grinder to own the libs
