Splitgate is pretty cool, makes you feel like a god damned tactical genius with how unawares you can catch people. It's funny cause I kind of hated Portal but wow used offensively... I'm a bit more into the concept now!

ZearothK posted:? A semi-closed beta is currently going on, and it's... very 7/10. It's generally competent, but doesn't really capture what made Left 4 Dead so memorable. Nor does it manage to really iterate on the genre's core concepts. It's mostly a plain L4D clone with some bits and bobs bolted on to it, like a weapon attachment system. They also completely whiffed the PvP mode. For F2P game it'd be fine, as a full price title it's laughable.

Cards, character unique traits and a weapon rarity system that add "RPG" elements without really justifying themselves. Its real baffling and feels skivvy, like WB is going to insert a whole bunch bullshit to fill in the cracks.

I can pretty much agree with those sentiments, I've played the beta and it honestly just makes me want to play L4D2 again instead. The cards you start out with are like... so uninteresting it hurts. It's like +10% ammo, +5 health, yadda yadda. You can find more interesting ones during actual runs, but... those are random. It doesn't feel like you're making a proper build, you're just picking random poo poo. Oh and some of those will be supposedly locked behind season passes too. The guns are like... whatever. It literally does not need a rarity system or the attachments or whatever. You pick up a gun and shoot zombies. Of note is that like almost every gun is hyper accurate (including shotguns losing spread when you aim down the sights). The PVP mode is a goddamn joke and would have been 300% better as a straight up port from L4D. But yeah the monetization already looks like the Evolve one which does kind of raise flags. Like, did they learn nothing?

The last game we really liked in this vein was Walking Dead Season 1. I guess it would be something story heavy with branching dialogue/narrative with limited gameplay that wouldn't be boring to watch. I played a bit of that android one made by the Indigo Prophecy weirdos and that seemed like it fit the bill, but it's really unstable on my system. Most important would be good writing (like good in other mediums, not just good for a video game) and a compelling story. I think "Life Is Strange" is at least in form what I'm looking for, but I haven't heard many opinions about the story. Do you like campy teen horror films? Until Dawn was a lot of fun- even my wife enjoyed it and she’s a video game hater.

I'm not sure Cepheus Protocol is a fun/cool RTS with zombies and active indie devs. I enjoyed poking at it last year and will enjoy poking it again when it comes out of early access Drake Hollow is a Nintendo 64 game in disguise, it's an action-platformer collector-thing that I bounced off of as it seems to be aimed at preteens / more casual than I want. Which isn't a bad thing, just a taste thing. Nowhere Prophet is a deckbuilding roguelike in the style of FTL with nodes you travel to and bullshit bosses and an AMAZING aesthetic

How! posted:Do you like campy teen horror films? Until Dawn was a lot of fun- even my wife enjoyed it and she’s a video game hater. Just about to try it! I read some reviews about it last night and it looks promising. I think it's going to depend on how seriously it tries to take itself with its premise (if I understand, it's about a group of friends going up to party in a creepy, inaccessible cabin to celebrate the anniversary of... some of their other friends mysteriously disappearing in the same area?) It seems fun. Based just on the demo I've played, I have high hopes for Detroit: Become Human. I love pretty much everything derived from "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", but it seems more serious so it's really going to live or die by the quality of its writing and storytelling. I'm saving Obra Djinn for last because I think it's going to be a slam dunk.

Separate post for a separate subject. I don't really have strong opinions about video games (if it's fun, I play it, if not, I don't) but after playing Battlefield V's single player campaign and Far Cry 4 back to back, I hate hate HATE unskippable cutscenes in action games. If it's something story driven, it's understandable, but I just want to shoot Nazis and skin animals and stuff. Writing also seems to be the thing studios spend the least amount of time and money on, so why showcase it so prominently?

The buried detail is there was a specific contract agreement that forbid those nude scenes, and David Cage went ahead and had the scene made anyways and it didn't appear in the game. The original FMV scene only showed from the neck up, there was no need to fully realistically model the nude body after there was legal language forbidding it. Gives a pretty good slice of his perception of women and consent at the least.

Well poo poo, PSN has a pretty stingy return policy that this doesn't qualify for. Oh well. Until Dawn is kind of neat, I guess. Am I supposed to be trying to kill specific characters? Because I'm a few hours in and I've had about enough of four of them. Everyone's surprisingly lighthearted given the reason they're up there, but I guess tonal dissonance is part of camp horror. I'm curious to see how my early decisions are going to play out later in the story. Also, pretty sure the brother, Josh, is trying to exact some kind of revenge on his friends. Or shoot a porno, he's pretty invested in other people getting laid.

Whooo wants weird steam drama? Warzone 2100 is a super old RTS from the 90s that's pretty cool - modular units, a campaign where you build one base and use it as a hub to send units to the maps you're trying to conquer - and it's free and open-source! https://wz2100.net/ Now, the drama: it's also been released on steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1241950/Warzone_2100/ .... but not by the main open source team. It's some random dude who keeps pulling the public releases and putting them on steam. He doesn't listen to them asking him to stop, and well I'll just quote their announcement from the discord: quote:A brief summary of the history of the Steam build, and the individual who uploaded it: As the steam version is free I genuinely do not understand why this dude is doing this. What benefit does he get? Why has he been doing it for over a year now?

You're not *supposed* to kill characters, but I think the game wants you to feel OK with losing a few if the chips fall that way. I will say that, for me, my opinion of some of the kids changed as the game went on and they showed different sides to their characters. Some characters I adored at first and came to adore less, others I initially hated but later came to respect.

My favorite David Cage thing has always been that press conference where he's sitting with Willem Dafoe and Elliot Page, two actors who are famously easy to work with and generally chill guys, and both of them look like they're trying to figure out how to melt through the chairs so they can get out of frame and run away:
