Apparently he legit didn't understand that all those guys were going for that specific shot of the train and he ruined it for them, but the train nerds were so pissed they dug around and found out he has a taco shop, so they tried to review bomb him and ruin/shame him, but it backfired horribly because people don't like the train nerds, and now people are literally lining up to get his tacos lol

lol it probably took them weeks to find 3 people who actually use the app in the first place lol that the best they could do was one of them being in American too. the lack of a chinese language feature for this particular app leads me to believe that the typical user signed up not for a computer boyfriend but as an eccentric means of english language practice it remains an open question whether the relevant washington post reporters were simply too stupid to come up with this very obvious explanation or if they deliberately obfuscated it for not appealing to the narrative they wanted to push

It's not a Chinese app, it's a US based app. It also doesn't have mandarin support (though it's supposed to launch next year I guess, which makes sense because hey a market of 1.4bn people of course they want to work on that). The 420mm USD number they gave btw is for "AI chatbots" which is definitely just general chatbots including stuff like customer service automation that they're just framing to make sound like maybe it's for these romance apps. The actual numbers they give about this, again, AMERICAN app, 55k downloads (just downloads, nothing about active users), and 9000 in a forum/chat group, are literally nothing at all in a country of 1.4bn. The later larger numbers they give about the Microsoft one aren't a dating app, though potentially have some use as social replacements for people. They're basically 1) conjuring a story where there really isn't one, or at least not the one that's being implied now, i.e. that significant numbers of Chinese youth are doing this, or 2) had to make the best of what they could with some assignment, 3) maybe just really bad at it because to be honest I would not at all be surprised if there were a number of actual domestic Chinese apps that did online fake lover poo poo BUT I'd bet most of them are male oriented which isn't that interesting because most readers know about nerds and their anime girlfriends and they needed the hook of it being about women because that will get more clicks, but also 4) always worth keeping in mind that this may have been framed much better i.e. more specifically making this clear this is about some specific people and how they've dealt with issues of relationships with technology and less handwavyily suggesting this is now "a thing" in China before an editor got at it and changed the headline/lede to generate that sweet, sweet ad revenue.
