Even if it does, it's too late for schools starting to open in the next two weeks. To those unfamiliar: Our Supreme Court is elected and party-affiliated, all of its current members are Republican.

Again, I am asking...do we have legislators with active COVID-19 cases on the House floor unmasked right now, or was Ramos speculating? Because I could see Delta taking out this session, unless they just decide actively giving each other COVID-19 is NBD.

I don't think she knows what she's talking about. https://twitter.com/James_E_White/status/1424850702812262401 Here's the current roll call, we can count together (Clardy is the only one we know for sure has it) Eddie 3 said over the weekend he expects there to be a quorum, they only had 26 members commit to staying in DC, it looks to me like a quorum is inevitable, especially the closer they get to 100. I mean, it looks like open civil war in the caucus right now Also that TRO suit is what Miss T and Collier and the other D's asked to be removed from Er...hmm https://twitter.com/bradj_tx/status/1424855497656737804?s=21 https://twitter.com/scottbraddock/status/1424855665609162758?s=21 If that was in the rules, Ramos definitely didn’t know what she was talking about zoux fucked around with this message at 23:18 on Aug 9, 2021 |

It's probably more optimism that people who are ill with and knowingly have a contagious disease would show up for quorum. But at this point, I just assume R legislators with COVID are gonna show up maskless anyway.

They were declaring victory and saying that their exodus to Washington was a huge success, so the smart thing to do would've been to come back as a unified group, do a big homecoming rally, pledge to fight on the floor or whatever, instead we're getting twitter flame wars within the caucus and no path forward. Do some of them really think that they can maintain a quorum break indefinitely? That TRO against the civil arrest of house members isn't going to last the week. https://twitter.com/chucklindell/status/1425095847272976389 They got high on their own supply after they actually won for once and instead of taking that victory and passing a gutted version of the regular session bill, they did this. zoux fucked around with this message at 15:16 on Aug 10, 2021 |

Yeah, the actual purpose if dems in Texas is to make a bunch of ineffectual noise and then jump ship to somewhere they stand a chance of winning/advancement.

It seems like they did what they could in the first session, now that they're in the second phase - they should send a small group to negotiate the bill (I figured this is what Moody was doing) and have the rest return to their districts and ensure that when the troopers come and they're dragged out in cuffs and taken to Austin that it is caught on camera. Creating the optics of State troopers arresting State Reps at church and taking them to Austin to force a quorum to restrict voting rights seems like the best victory Dems can really hope for. All of the Harris County stuff that was good (drive through voting, 24 hour voting etc.) are all gone.

https://twitter.com/brianlopeztx/status/1425100723973406734 You take out covid, that puts bed capacity at 73%, is that normal? Seems high to me. Well that would take a unified caucus, because once they have 100, the GOP would be perfectly happy to let the remaining 50 Democrats sit in their districts and do nothing.

Oh it's everything. I'm not even really talking about covid, if someone asked me "what do you think the total hospital capacity is on any given day (outside the pandemic)" I'd've guessed less than half.

Dems should do literally everything they can to stop Republicans from enacting their agenda every time Republicans try. Drag it out and make it as painful as possible for every bill. Republicans have abandoned decorum and good faith governance over a generation ago so gently caress them and never do anything to help them pass legislation.

https://twitter.com/PatrickSvitek/status/1425180964100222984 Everyone is acting like this is beyond the pale but nearly every parliamentary body in the world is empowered to compel the attendance of membership to establish a quorum. The original purpose of the US Senate Sergeant of Arms was to chase down absent members. It's in every edition of Roberts' Rules of Order. Also, all the members know this -it's in both the state constitution and the House rules which they all approved - but are pretending they don't in order to gin up outrage (or in this case, raise campaign funds) zoux fucked around with this message at 20:53 on Aug 10, 2021 |

San Antonio has joined the mask mandate rebellion: https://twitter.com/Joeycules/status/1425190082395389956 So is there any chance that Abbott sees that the tide is turning and does a new executive order allowing school mask mandates in order to save face/take credit, or should we brace for him to go full DeSantis and fight tooth and nail so that he can be seen standing up to those oppressive liberal cities?
|
# ? Aug 10, 2021 21:27 |
He's absolutely going to fight it because backing down give his primary opponents a chance to attack him from the right. It doesn't even matter if parents approve of the mask mandate, Abbot only gives a poo poo about the Republican Primary voter those folks are intensely anti-mask-mandate.

He won't even need to issue a new executive order. Last time he did nothing, then when counties figured out how to loop hole his EO he basically tried to take credit for them cracking the code because cases were spiraling and something had to happen but he wasn't about to be the first mover.
