CannonFodder posted:The Warcraft 2 expansion CD would play music when put in a regular CD player. It would play the soundtrack, and because it was the 90s there was a hidden track. Many games in the 90s did this. I distinctly remember ripping the soundtrack from Half-Life as there was this kickin’ rad song during I think a chase sequence with a helicopter that I used for a project in school.

Knormal posted:At the time it was the only way to have good-quality audio on a home PC. CD drives could natively play CD audio tracks and stream it to the audio card so it didn't cost any CPU cycles to process. If you opened a case back then there was actually a little cable running from the CD drive to the soundcard just for that purpose. At one point I had a old 486 laptop that took about 100% CPU usage just to play one of those new-fangled "MP3" files, probably more like 105% since it couldn't quite manage to play one at native speed without skipping. Your only other option for long audio files like a song was MIDI, or uncompressed WAV files that were less CPU-intensive to play since they didn't have to be decoded in realtime but were prohibitively large. Hell, remember how long it too to encode an MP3? You'd be churning away for like 25 minutes with your 486SX or Performa to rip a 3-minute song (and then it would have little skips and pops in it and you'd be like ffffuuuuuuu)

At the risk of continuing a discussion that belongs in the PYF 90e thread (please post these things in that thread, too!): I also remember putting in a different CD into the drive while playing a game when I learned that the code is something simple lime [play: track_04] or whatever and it player another game’s music. Felt like such a l337 h@X0r!
