Did she say how the files got corrupted? Just deleting the files and emptying the recycle bin does not remove the files from the Hdd and they will be fully recoverable, the only way they become in danger of being unrecoverable is if you then put new data into the HDD like if she reinstalled windows over her old install to give to her sister.

If it's a classic magnetic platter drive then yes the data stays around until the filesystem decides to use the sector for something else (and that can happen quite fast on a modern OS by the way), but if it's an SSD then the OS will instruct the firmware that the deleted data is now free (TRIM command) which permits the SSD to electrically erase those data and have any reads of them return blank data. Assume that if you have an SSD then "deleted" means "no recovery". If you have data that your job and career hinges on, take backups. Take multiple. Test them. Store them on a disconnected harddrive at a friend or relative or bank box.
