In fairness, these are reruns from decades ago, when weekday strips and were just black-and-white linework that had to be legible when reduced to a few inches, on newsprint. That isn't a medium that lends itself to detailed depictions of eroded rock strata. (And whoever did the coloring for the website seems to have just slapped a big gradient on it and called it a day.)

In September 2007, overall inflation accelerating (the rate of change was increasing). Prices were about 2.8 percent higher than they had been a year earlier, which was actually quite similar to the core CPI growth rate (2.4). Core “missed” the big run up in fuel prices that year and the next, but the reasons (monetary) policy makers tend to look at it is because it’s less volatile and does a better job of capturing where prices are going in the future, when the choices they make today will have an effect!

Lots of people don’t get why we talk about core inflation, so I can’t really blame her for that one, although prices really weren’t growing that quickly overall relative to either historical experience or what we’re experiencing today (although today’s inflation is also largely attributable to prices of particular goods, like used cars)

This has been your inflation minute, brought to you by the thread economist. See you next time Nancy mentions prices and I look up how much it is in 2021 dollars

I'm glad I'm not the only person reading this going "uh..." Like, this entire thing seemed doomed to failure from the beginning because they just did not have the time to properly study the person they were impersonating, but they just went ahead anyways. I can't think of many worse choices for impromptu impersonation than a woman going to meet her fiancée, frankly.

Maybe he's watching a slightly more recent Star Search rerun.

Irene Levine Paull was a writer and labor activist from Minnesota who felt that the type of middle class women who worked with the poor between the wars were policing them, while she preferred to fight for their economic rights. From Wiki: "When folk singers Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger visited Duluth, they stayed with Irene and [her husband] Henry." And of course, the portrait for her Wikipedia page is from the hearing where she told Joe Goddamn McCarthy's HUAC where they could stick it.

This is a choice quote from one of her works: "Every generation has its struggles and its sufferings. No generation is ever a happy one. Enjoy each moment. It's from the despair and from the depths that we learn the most, not from the happy moments. Seek the truth. There's such a clean joy in truth, even when you're a victim of it. What will happen in the future belongs to the future. The moment depends on us." And that's my way of saying the promised arrangement in that last panel has potential.
