i feel like the wikipedia page on Afghanistan history is leaving some things out

"In April 1978, the communist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) seized power in a bloody coup d'état against then-President Mohammed Daoud Khan, in what is called the Saur Revolution. The PDPA declared the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, with its first leader named as People's Democratic Party general secretary Nur Muhammad Taraki.[88] This would trigger a series of events that would dramatically turn Afghanistan from a poor and secluded (albeit peaceful) country to a hotbed of international terrorism."

There have of course been states, but a state is not a modern nation state -- something that didn't really exist anywhere in 1750

you know what the word "afghan" means right? it's a nation, the majority of afghans were Pashtun before the British sliced half of the country off.

If Afghanistan was a Pashtun nation-state they would have initiated language reforms to eliminate other identities. Also, having most of your national identity live in another state kinda goes against that whole "being a nation state" thing

The chosen route follows an already developed corridor with major roads and population centres, the Uzbek and Turkmenistani side are barren in comparison. Also both countries may be more stable, but they are ruled by insane delusional autocrats.
