My friend was just over in Ukraine for a year as part of the canadian military training the ukrainian military. he absolutely encountered a nazi problem. Also some of the ukrianian solders also were nazi leaning too.

Not that I've spoken to a huge number of Ukrainians or recent immigrants, but the problem does seem to center around a very specific wave of immigrants (and their descendants), in much the same way that lunatic right-wing bullshit spouts from a very specific segment of Cuban-Americans, not Cubans or even Cuban-Americans in general.

There was a canadaland podcast (I think it was them) that actually dealt with how right-wing partisans were courted and aided after they came to Canada as a way of suppressing the much more prarie socialist leanings of the Ukrainian Canadian community at the time. Ukrainian Nazis in Canada aren't an accident, they are (as ever) part of a deliberate effort to suppress socialism and left-wing goals and foment anti-communism in specific communities.

There is always a slight chance that when someone says they fled persecution in Ukraine, they were being persecuted for having been a Nazi collaborator. So while technically true, perhaps not the most sympathetic case. Then there are some who will proudly tell you they fought for the Nazis.

I recently found out one of my uncles, who I always thought was vaguely white latino from Argentina, actually has kinfolk in Germany on his mom's side. As in, she was from Germany but came to Argentina in "the early 50s", married there and moved to Canada. I was  after that, decided not to pry to much further into it.

Similar thing with croats. If you look at most Croatian Canadian churches, most of the ones I've seen have the version of the Croatian Coat of Arms with the white square first. Not something most Canadians would notice, but it was used by the NDH (fascist Croatian government during WW2) and in Croatia it's considered a symbol of that regime. Basically about as blatant as flying a swastika in Canada. At one point it was banned in Austria but I'm not sure if it still is. Like Ukrainians, far-right diaspora Croatians have made great strides in convincing local authorities that it's a symbol of independence because it was used a few times in medieval history. The sad thing is that there are plenty of Croatian leftists here that came in the 90s, and as a group ex-Yugos are probably further left than any other formerly communist Europeans. But because the diaspora organizations and churches were already established by fascists long before then, those voices get drowned out.

There's an academic named Per Anders Rudling who has written quite a bit on this subject. He identifies a very interesting dynamic of official multiculturalism, which is that by recognizing 'Ukrainian' as a constituent part of the Canadian identity the federal government gets to elevate both particular peoples/groups as representatives of the Ukrainian identity, and also particular conceptions of Ukrainianness as official. Needless to say, the government was very friendly to Banderites and other anti-communists, and not particularly helpful to the prairie socialists.

This evening I ran into an acquaintance/friend who is now an army recruiter. He's truly pleasant to be around, despite this, and we go way back. So we chatted for maybe an hour. Things got a bit heated when he lavished praise on Chrystia Freeland and quickly afterward said that he thought Mark Carney was "a genius, like Ignatieff". I don't think I'd ever met a real-life tankie for the Libs before. Moments before, Steven Guilbeault jogged past me as I biked through parc Laurier. This plays directly into my belief that the PLC is a simulation that only glitches into real-life existence in the lead-up to elections.
