Sounds like CLC has basically gone into indefinite hiatus, which is the least surprising news, especially with Yujin on Girls Planet 999. The surprising part is the news broke on the show rather than an official statement from Cube lmao

e: smh didn't see the post above lmfao

e2: a shameful snipe. have this in honour of exid's 9th anniversary

Well poo poo. Yujin just unveiled on GP999 that CLC has been dismissed by CUBE. Obvious, but still sucks especially that the company let the news break through her.

Yea its been obvious that cube has had CLC written off for a while. Like all their solo project stuff from the last year or two has been done with a "if this doesn't turn a profit we're not doing another one" or "you need to show us there is enough interest" based on comments they've made here and there. Once Yujin showed up on the list of GP999 you knew that the group was done outside of a crazy random runback along brave girls style. Having her be the one to break the news feels sort of on-brand for cube's overall management of the group.

Overall cube just seems sort of lovely. I might have mentioned it before, but I don't think they have any good talent in terms of A&R (ie the people in charge of developing the sound+music+etc for the artists). Its extremely clear that g-idle has an incredible amount of control over their own output and the difference to how CLC's image/sound just chased the trend is stark to me. Cube seems to be maybe decent on the non-music side of the job, in terms of like finding shows and stuff to get them on, but that's a lot harder to track and I'm not too tempted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Someone else might be able to comment on their boy group issue stuff but I recall there being some sort of issue there, though I don't recall specifics.

For what it's worth, I don't think Cube's issue is in their music production. CLC has some great stuff. Their promotion of artists who may not be hitting the numbers they want isn't great, though. Which sucks, but it is a business after all.

The issue isn't the technical production on a given song, those tend to be just fine. Instead its the greater consideration of *what* song they're doing for an artist, or what sort of style/feel to do. Like a company comes up with an idea for a group before debut, of what sort of music/mv/image/etc they want for a group. This won't stay static over time, but every release you still need to decide what you're doing with all of those things. I basically think cube isn't good at managing that aspect if the group isn't having the success they want.

Like you said CLC's stuff isn't bad or anything, but the timing on a lot of them felt like a "X concept is doing well, let's do an X concept" and just being late to the table. Overall their numbers have been consistent, but it isn't really until the last few consistent style releases that you start to see some growth. Basically I think shifting around so much just prevents the base for a group from growing release-to-release and instead forces you to rely on getting a big breakout hit. I remember people really liking hobgoblin and when the following release was like a soft-pallet ballad I could almost hear the wind being knocked out of their sails.

The only good things I can say about CUBE are that they've managed to largely stay out of Soyeon's way, and haven't managed to completely botch Pentagon or Lightsum... yet.

I think with Soyeon it’s more her sheer force of will given their debut story and even up to them saying no to Hwaa for a year and telling her she couldn’t do the happy meal box packaging for Windy. I think they’re just incompetent more than malicious.

Variety and chasing trends is just kpop.jpg, especially if you haven't had a big enough hit to then expand on and continue with what works. It's unfortunate, and it would be nice if more groups had the leeway or funds to grow from their original concept and find success, but with how oversaturated the market is-- now especially-- you kind of need to have that big breakout hit to survive at all, unless you're from a huge company that can afford to stick to the original plan for a while longer. Cube isn't a small company to be sure, but they're no Big 3 or HYBE. Plus, in regards to their concept, I think a lot of people were expecting the sister group of 4minute to have a similar vibe, and they instead started out more cute and chill before slowly making their way to something like Hobgoblin. By the time they landed on a concept that worked for them and the girls seemed to enjoy as well, it seems like Cube wasn't overly invested in capitalizing on that.

CLC's numbers have been consistent for sure, but consistently low-- especially album sales. Cube's new GG Lightsum, in comparison, debuted in June and have already sold 40k+ units. CLC's best selling single album is Helicopter at just under 19k. Lightsum's Vanilla passed that in the first week.

idk sometimes a group is good and just never takes off, whether it's due to bad timing, bad promotion, member switch ups, none of the individual members being particularly popular etc-- which CLC was hit with nearly all of after debut. Their first song did pretty well, but then they had a super long hiatus and came back with two new members, and in that time groups like Twice and Gfriend debuted. If you can't keep the momentum in kpop you get hosed pretty fast. Didn't they have another long hiatus after Hobgoblin, too? Or around then anyway. Such a shame.

In the end tho often times success is just luck, even if you're good and the company actually does try to promote you well.

All that said, Cube in general is a bit of a hot mess and their management in general seems pretty lovely unless you're making bank for them. I hope the girls can all move on well from this. Hopefully Yujin makes the final lineup for GP999, and goddamnit Yeeun is too talented to be doing nothing. Hell, maybe if Yujin does well enough Cube will reconsider this hiatus or try to hold onto CLC. Doubtful, though.

re: Soyeon, she's more or less their new HyunA imo-- right down to already being popular before her group debuted-- and definitely getting that same kind of freedom and attention she did. And well deserved! She just needs to uhhh avoid dating anybody publicly I guess lmfao. God I hope Cube has learned from dropping HyunA and Dawn like that.

Speaking of which, I think the HyunA x Dawn collab mentioned earlier in the year will be P-Nation's next drop Psy teased the other day.

CUBE is spectacularly bad at handling PR issues, and I basically knew Soojin was a goner once they quintupled-down with her letter and pursuing legal action. Basically every other idol made it through their bullying accusations earlier this year by going on hiatus, keeping their head down, and/or finding some way to bury the hatchet. The only other ones that look to face some significant consequences are the April girls, because that one was truly bad and DSP is somehow even worse at PR than CUBE.

I don't really see this affecting (G)I-DLE's recorded music that much, Soojin didn't have a particularly distinctive voice. But Soyeon, Yuqi, Minnie, and Miyeon all do, so performances of their older stuff is gonna be a little weird, and stage presence will suffer a bit. I'm honestly most worried about how Shuhua's gonna handle her emotional rock leaving the group.

Still not sure why anyone at Cube thought that publicly requesting that statement from Seo Shin Ae was a good idea, apologising and going on hiatus with a promise to improve as a person like others did seemed like a much more logical thing to do than trying to get into a public argument with an award winning actress that was also a school bullying prevention ambassador

Hate to say it, but not unlike CLC this is the least surprising thing to me. The only surprising part is how long it took.

Cube and Soojin both really dug their own grave on this one. Part of me can admire the company for taking Soojin at her word and standing up for the statements she made, but the other part of me is like ... drat, maybe just hold on a second and do some investigation before putting all your eggs in that one basket? Or have her apologize and take some time off anyway? Even if the apology takes into account that she doesn't fully remember her actions back then, it would still be much better than an immediate denial statement that had shades of 'there were always bad rumours about me in school, i can't help that i stood out so much lol'.

Whether she remembers what she allegedly did or not, there's very much still the possibility that it did happen and she just didn't think it was that bad. A lot of the time people who bully others don't even realize they're doing it. There's just so many ways they could have handled this that would have gone better than how they actually did. And she did say she would leave the group if it turned out this stuff was true, so ...

I'm curious to see if we'll get any news on how the legal proceedings went with Cube taking the initial accusers to court, whether the court ruled in their favour or if they settled outside of it.

Sucks to see people lose their careers over something that happened when they were in middle or even high school, but that's unfortunately one of the risks you take in being a public figure-- and especially in being an idol, where your reputation needs to be even more pristine than the usual celebrity, since your main demographic is kids and teenagers.

This is what was the final nail in the coffin, 100%. There was a low possibility of maybe salvaging those initial statements if they kept this between Soojin and the initial accusers, rather than dragging in a famous actress who has been open since well before Soojin even debuted about how badly bullied she was in school.

e: The craziest part of this is most of the statements about this case came from Soojin herself, and I can't fathom how the hell anybody at Cube's PR team either let her or encouraged her to take charge with that poo poo lmao. At the very least they could have gone over some of those statements to fluff them up a bit b/c from what I understand, Soojin came off quite arrogant in Korean. Again, I kinda dig Cube just backing their artist like that but whew lad it's like they just left her out to dry at the same time.

One of the other posters might know better than myself, but it looks like they have decent but not amazing sales numbers, and off-hand I think they have a pretty solid general reputation in terms of ability. They're not really stagnant/dead group status, they're going through military service stuff at the moment.

SK requires like a year of service sometime between like 18-24 or something like that, with some various options for delay and yadda yadda. So you'll see boy groups hit a point where they try to do a staggered entry of those and have the other members do solo/unit stuff (ie the people who haven't gone in yet/already got out/are foreign members).
