Yeah, driver hitting the door was riding the right side of their lane, but legally, so that's fine. Would've been close but no contact if the door stayed closed the whole time.

Totally on the moron opening her door into traffic.

- The car that hit the door is in the right ("non-left") of the two lanes

I guess he's not exactly centered in his lane, but he's hardly "on the wrong side of the road", right?

It was a joke along the lines of:
"here's how this would work in the UK"
"In the UK, that would be the wrong side of the road :dadjoke:"

All correct. He's perfectly in his lane. The person clearly opened the door into traffic giving the other car no time to do anything but hit it.

I had an English teacher in high school who was actually British, and boy howdy was it fun to rile her up buy just placidly stating repeatedly that we drive on the right side of the road and at just the right moment saying "But we DO drive on the right side. In the UK you drive on the left side."

The only thing more fun was the day someone asked her if they celebrate Mardi Gras in the UK.

Yeah, it's not uncommon for people in here to start talking about a joke like it's a real argument until people actually start arguing about it and then nobody knows what anyone is talking about.

I kinda disagree with this part still. It's hard to tell from the video, but the car looks like it drives right over the white lines marking the parking space. It doesn't look like they stayed in their lane properly.

For that reason, I still argue 50-50, but we'll never know the whole story.

Clearly had the driver of the black car been 6 inches further away from the white lines it would have avoided the situation.

It's the loving parked car's fault.

Because it seems to me you could have just called it in instead of literally breaking into your neighbour's house twice.

It was getting on for 3am and I wasn't in the mood to be up until first light dealing with the police whenever they could be bothered to get up to us. This fixed the problem quickly and my otherwise nice neighbours didn't get a call from the police about their son at 3am while they were on holiday. Son learned and didn't do it again, and all without having to get murdered by his parents who would have had to fly back.

This is the praxis that undergirds calls to "defund the police" and find "community alternatives". 100% serious, I salute you fellow goon in solving a community problem in a way that caused no harm or legal trouble to your fellow citizen. I dunno about each state law in the US but in every EU country I've been in you're gonna get told to gently caress yourself if you open a door into traffic. Same if you door a cyclist.

Yeah, that's fair. I've been on both sides of noise complaints before, and certainly have had the cops involved in situations they didn't need to be... but I'm just saying, that could have gone wrong, breaking into your neighbour's house twice over some noise, and you might not be telling the story so proudly then. Certainly there are places across the pond where if you were unlucky enough to be caught, that kid would have been well within his rights to shoot your rear end.

Not a brit but I find in that part of the world 1: police do not show up to noise complaints. And 2: if they do show up it's 3 hours after you call and they do not give a gently caress about noise complaints.

I meant the other 'across the pond', as in North America, as I gathered ReelBigLizard is in the UK.

You're right that going right to police involvement is probably not ideal. I'm just saying that it could have gone real sideways, and also it's kind of weird to frame it like "kid learned his lesson." Only lesson he learned is that one of his neighbours is a crafty psycho, and maybe to be on guard with a cricket bat next time.

"I'll just open my door then look if anyone is coming at me".

In the Netherlands I learned a trick for never getting in this situation like the idiot in the video: Grab the door handle with the arm furthest away from the door so you swing your torso to look in the direction of incoming traffic / cyclists. It's very helpful for not getting in a 100% preventable accident like the one experienced by this salt of the earth.
