Trans people who decide to do so see it as a way to complete the transition, which indicates the importance of body materiality. Using the information gathered during interviews with trans persons in Iran, I examine bodily experiences during the process of transition, in which I have identified three phases: self-recognition, passing, and rebirth. These analyses show that transition does not happen at once or suddenly, it rather takes a long time and may continue after sex-change surgery, which is only one part of it. The 2016 article was pretty illuminating concerning the legal status of trans people in Iran—most surprisingly to me, that the legality hinges almost entirely on the deference to Shari'a and fatwa by Iranian law where there is no applicable statute (there is not). Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's 1987 fatwa opened the door and his status as a revolutionary figure has kept it open, but it can conceivably shut—that is, as it happens, where it is even accessible. Transsexual persons who undergo the surgery may ask the family court for a legal change of name and gender. In other cases, if TIP’s psychiatrists diagnose the applicant as a homosexual, the person will be considered mentally ill and referred to a different section for more psychotherapy treatment. It should be noted that persons diagnosed with GID should also fulfill other requirements to be eligible for sex change surgery, which is different from being medically diagnosed. These requirements are: legal age of majority (18 years old), having completed 12 months of hormone therapy, and have lived as the opposite gender for one year (Saberi et al. 2010, 209). LMO in Iran assesses the diagnosis of GID based on DSM-IVFootnote11 diagnostic criteria (Aghabikloo et al. 2013, 131). Transition as a form of conversion therapy may occur, but the chances of it being a matter of actual policy are somewhat diminished by there being other established and comparatively inexpensive varieties of conversion therapy as well as homosexuality itself not being an automatic death sentence (or even prima facie illegal, but that is the thinnest of distinctions). Is there pressure to straighten oneself by transition? Certainly, from certain sectors and not exactly consistently or evenly. Fact is, even if the outside narrative can be perfectly reconciled with the accounts gathered by Saeidzadeh, what we're looking at for a great number of Iranian trans people is the choice between being murdered by the state or their family (however indirectly and slowly) Which isn't to say that anyone has it easy. Michael Bailey, but at the very least Dr. Shahriar Kohanzad was never caught loving his patients. The extent to which definitive conclusions can be drawn is difficult for a wealth of reasons, but I can say without a single shred of doubt that long-standing ideas about transgender identity being intrinsically tied to male homosexuality and social contagion are exerting a great deal of influence both within Iranian society and without. Which is a very long-winded way of saying "well yes and no" but I didn't read all that poo poo to just say "yes and no" so if you don't like it nuts to you, McGillicuddy
