Are Jimmy Dore's staff unionized?

American Prospect apparantly is.

Many people on Facebook keep assuring me that the Democrats are socialists and/or communists.

I'm still waiting on anyone to tell me one single thing they've done in line with those ideologies.

Have you guys seen them do anything like that?

When society makes it impossible to earn a living from journalism, journalism becomes the job solely of people who can afford to do it. I was by far the poorest person where I worked, and I got so sick of just trying to get people to understand things like "sweatshops bad." It's one of many reasons the industry is failing, both economically and in its mission.

When the government does things.

Which, oddly enough, is the same definition of socialism that a bunch of progressives/socdems/"leftists" use, except its good not bad

SARASOTA COUNTY -- The first time Nathan Robinson took the SAT, he nailed it. His score of 2,310 was just 90 points short of perfect.

Most anyone would have left it at that. But not Nathan, a 16-year-old student at Pine View School for the Gifted in Osprey who actually enjoyed taking the SAT. He signed up for a second try.

“The SAT test is kind of fun,” he said. “Everyone else seems to see it as a chore, but I really don’t mind. I guess I’m just weird.”

He got a perfect score -- one of 24 students from Florida to do so.

“I was hoping that I could ace it,” said Nathan, a senior who plans to apply to some of the most competitive colleges in the country.

His mother is very proud, and the faculty at Pine View is talking about putting him in the hall of fame.

But Nathan, who gets mostly As and Bs, says he considers himself a good student, not necessarily a great one. He sheepishly admits he’s been caught napping in class.

His mother thought he was a little too lackadaisical about the SAT too.

“I felt he didn’t prepare thoroughly enough,” Rosemary Robinson said. “He didn’t put an enormous amount of effort in it and was just very laid back about the whole thing.”

That all changed when she went online to get his scores.

“I burst into his room and screamed ‘Yes!’” she said.

Technically, Nathan studied more, just not a lot more.

He took the test cold the first time. The second time, he did a few practice tests just before taking the real thing.

“I didn’t really do any of the things that people say you should do,” he said. “If I had any tips it would be not to get stressed by it. Take it easy, channel the test, plug the numbers into the formulas and do what you have to do.”

Pine View Principal Steve Largo says Nathan and only one other student that he can remember has ever earned a perfect score in the 18 years he’s been at the school.

The other student earned what used to be the top score, a 1,600, before testmakers added a writing section last year to reflect what students study in high school.

“It’s absolutely incredible,” Largo said. “A perfect score is rare, even for us, and Nathan is obviously going to be in the Pine View hall of fame.”

Nathan wears John Lennon-style glasses with pink lenses, and when he’s not taking tests or combing record shops for music from the ’50s and ’60s, he’s busy putting together political youth segments for BLAB TV-Channel 21. He has done interviews with congressional candidates Jan Schneider and Tramm Hudson.

Nathan is also an attorney with the Sarasota County Teen Court, where first-time offenders in misdemeanor trials are judged by teen juries.

This year he will serve as the president of Pine View Progressive Youth, a group of young political activists who took the Sarasota County School Board to task for using Web filters that blocked students from accessing sites about Wicca, Buddhism and Islam.

“I’m not sure I fit the norm for a teenager,” said Nathan, who spent his first six years in England, and still has the accent.

“I guess it’s fun to be different. I like strange people, who do odd things.”

For his senior year, Nathan has decided to add more to his already full plate.

“I’m taking a ridiculous number of APs next year -- eight actually,” he said, referring to Advanced Placement classes that can be taken for college credit. “I was talking with my friends, and they’re only taking three.”

In addition to more advanced classes, he’s also taking more SAT tests, this time in subjects such as math, American history and literature.

His plan goes like this: “To finish high school, go to college, major in political science and become an attorney,” he said. “That’s the tentative direction.”
