Like, I'm not mad at the boomer cook at my work because he's a loving line cook and we have the same lifestyle. But I loving hate my slightly-younger-than-me millennial boss because she has a big house and veneers and spent the whole first year of the pandemic hiding in the woods because she's loaded. mod sassinator posted:100k dead kids with a CFR of 0.1% (total guess but the CFR for kids definitely isn't the 0.5% we see for adults) would require all 100 million children in the country to be infected. realistically i doubt we can get much past 1/3 of kids infected before poo poo is really off the rails. and 0.1% is still probably way too high a CFR, it's probably more like 0.01%. so I'd wager we see about 1,000 kid deaths--which is still a horrific number and like 4x a bad flu year in deaths. if I'm totally off and it really is a 200x bad flu year (100k deaths) then holy poo poo you are right there will be parents gunning down principals and administrators in murder-suicide retributions also fun that you don't have to have all the cases at once, just as long as they're regional in time it overwhelms that regions resources because an avaliable pediactric ICU bed 500 miles away doesnt do you any good where you are theres only been 5 days of school here in my garbage florida county, in the first two days half the schools in the district had positive cases and quarantines. by day 5 we got the note that our kid was exposed and welp that's it for in person schooling until this is all over. and meanwhile we ban discussion along the lines of "i'd absolutely kill hitler" because an enormous number of deaths is a statistic but one monster getting merced is a tragedy

SpaceDrake posted:alright, but. im sorry cspam, i have to realpost for a minute here I expect empty platitudes from politicians and eventually some politician is going to get attacked by an angry parent. Perhaps shot or at least shot at. But I don't expect thousands of children to just get shuffled underneath the rug. As a mass we're pretty jaded but the personal tragedies are going to radicalize at least a few people towards violence. Someone else said that nothing happened after Sandy Hook. I say that it's hard to retaliate against a lone wolf shooter. Even though there are communities that essentially mint new "lone wolves", though obviously not always. But decisions made by government that kill this many children? People already hate government and they have a wide variety of targets to choose from. Also the dead at Sandy Hook were 27 children. The dead will likely number in the thousands. So this will become a numbers game. So you have many potential targets of an identifiable group of people in government and far more aggrieved people who will possible be radicalized or who are already radicalized. And radicalization happens a lot easier now that people are more often stuck at home with access to the internet. I expect violence against people in government. Harik posted:so the gigantic fuckup here is that you assume CFR is constant at any rate when in reality there's this thing i like to call the brick wall effect where you're just cruising along just fine with "acceptable" (to shitheaded death cultists) fatalities until you hit the point that you don't have the capacity to treat any more critically ill and whoops you run headfirst into the wall and splatter your brains out in a vertical brick wall of death Yeah something else to keep in mind is that kids don't get as sick as often and bounce back with hospitalization more than old people do but The hospital and ICU capacity for kids is comparatively tiny. So if kids do start getting hospitalized in greater numbers, the quality of care goes in the toilet much, much faster. And we have almost no experience treating severe covid in kids because it didn't really happen before Delta.

but hey we beat Alpha Anyway how worried should I be about working through this? I've been fully vaccinated since June 5 and my state has a mask mandate. We are in cubicles. For some loving reason people are allowed to unmask at their cubes. If I have to get on the phone I kind of move it a little so people can hear me. We have zero interaction with the public though and most of the staff are vaccinated.
