How is Hexen 2? It's one I've kinda always given a pass on out of just never hearing much of about it / having the impression it wasn't great.... but I feel like I've gotten some impression lately that it's..not bad? It's on a deep discount on steam right now so I'm wondering if I should grab it, and if there's anything I should know going in if I do.

e: Quakecon sale and Quake 1 isn't on sale???

Hexen 2 is good and enormously better than the prequel. It doesn't rely on just meaningless switch hunts; there's still a lot of find item to solve puzzle over here, but they're a lot more intuitive than poo poo like seven portals. Classes are still limited to four weapons, but having the tome of power helps stave off the sameyness quite a lot.

it's well worth the $1.49 steam is currently charging for it, but you should get http://uhexen2.sourceforge.net to actually run it. More people should play hexen 2, it's a good game!

It’s fine enough on a controller. It did come out on N64 and PlayStation.

I think it would benefit a lot from gyro aiming. I played a good amount of Quake Champions with my Switch Pro controller with that and I did decently well.

Yeah, Blood's a hard game. It's one of my favourites, but I do actually play on Pink on the Inside (mostly because I don't like every cultist having dynamite). I haven't tried it, I guess I'm a little bit of a purist and also I mostly play on Raze, but people here recommend Made to Order mode and turning up enemy count and turning down enemy accuracy, because cultists can be pinpoint, goddamn.

Honestly, if they'd just came out and said that I'd have gone, "oh, ok, EA's big and kinda poo poo so I'm not surprised." But baffling, meaningless corporate babble to try and cover their rear end that just makes it sound like they're trying to avoid outright saying something like that but accidentally saying exactly that?

That was a weird port. If I remember right it was effectively reimplemented on Lobotomy Software’s SlaveDriver engine, and has unusual quirks and some different levels. They apparently ported it to the original PlayStation too, but couldn’t find a publisher even though it was by al accounts a nicer experience than it was on the Saturn.

I am also hoping for some kind of Quake re-release that spurs renewed interest in the franchise. But I’ve gotten pretty cozy with the idea of keeping OG Quake alive with community mods… it’s been 25 years. I’m not sure they’d even get a sequel right now.

A weird, godforsaken console from the mid-90s that used a tacked-on Nvidia NV1 GPU when Sega realized that pushing shitloads of sprites wasn’t actually going to be the most in-demand task for the next generation. It had some neat bits - dual RISC CPUs, decent audio, and unambiguously better than the Tower of Hackery a 32x+Genesis+Sega CD amounted to, but Sega’s split focus and the relative difficulty of development versus the PS1 means it lost comprehensively. But it fared better than the Atari Jaguar!

Accchhhtually, the Saturn used two custom video display processors. They rendered 3D using quadrilaterals instead of triangles, and that's where the similarities to the NV1 end.

It seems like they're trying to turn around the whole "most hated company on Earth 6 years running" thing by getting dystopian as hell. Per the comments on this RPS article about the statement it looks like they've started sending PR interns to the slaughter in comment sections, presumably to do some half-assed public interfacing damage control or maybe just to absorb the brunt of gamer rage for fun? Who knows, it seems like a misguided attempt to humanize a heartless profit threshing machine through punching bag proxies, but whatever they're trying to do I hope it backfires gloriously.

The important thing about the Sega Saturn is it finally did what Sega wanted, sell really well in Japan. It did this at the expense of every other market worldwide and financially damaged them further but by god it did what they wanted

I could see YGHJ making sense for lefties, but right-handed it seems downright awkward in the face of how you normally use/position a keyboard. You pretty much lose all "landmarks" and modifier keys.

WASD being positioned right near 1->5 is also handy for shooters. Going for the number keys on YGHJ just feels awkward.

You also just didn't need that many keys when WASD got started.

It's true, you'll need to remap 1-4 to something else, but you'll gain 5-9.

And you'll get J as your landmark key, with the resting _ on it!

I more mean it's easier to remember/associate the keys with their functions, if that makes sense. But maybe that's just habit.

Even in the converted Angel Script (which is all in plaintext that you can just read in Fresh Supply), the AI doesn't check for crouching. It's tricky to say if it's a placebo effect, but what seems to be the case is that it makes your hitbox smaller, which makes any attacks have a larger margin of error.

N64, yes, but PlayStation? No it didn't. Very peculiar oversight, too. I recall Nightdive shopped their Quake port around to various publishers and literally nobody wanted it. Couldn't tell you why; even when Quake 2 was already out, the first was still a solid time.
