literally all rock music is descended from the blues just because you add a pentatonic solo to a song doesnt make it "blues rock"

there's a difference between being able to trace a band's lineage back to robert johnson through a chain 10 influences long, and having a lead guitarist/frontman that started off in an explicitly blues rock band. that immediate influence colors everything that comes after. it's true of a lot of the big rock bands of the era and you can hear it clearly by turning on any classic rock station

if pink floyd isn't explicitly a "blues rock" band, its blues influences are right under the surface and that turns me off. it's a matter of personal taste i guess

regarding the other recommendations, i'm actually a little surprised at how much i like mgmt. i completely ignored them after having electric feel shoved down my throat five million times. it's working is a good song. oh and king crimson rules, i definitely already know about them

That whole album is really good I think, and I’m not a super fan of their other stuff (I like it fine). But I go back to that one a lot.

But you should at least give Echoes a listen before you completely give up on Pink Floyd. I don’t like them a lot either but it’s a cool song.

I hope this isn't too subjective of a request, but can anyone point me towards any bands or songs or albums that are both funky and moody/somber, with maybe a heavier emphasis on the latter? Three specific songs I've been loving are "I Want Your Love" By Chic, "Here But I'm Gone" by Curtis Mayfield, and "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic.

I don't care for any specific era of music or anything like that, but I love that combination of heavy groove and melancholy tone, and I'm interested in exploring that space more.

Got a hankering for sad instrumental music again, this time in the vein of the second half of Sealed Vessel from the Hollow Knight soundtrack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLtCCfHYNiM&t=132s
(linked to said second half, but the whole track is worth a listen too)

Quick and easy keywords could be:
One or more of quartet, cello, symphony orchestra, choir, piano, high strings.
Some kind of build up and crescendo, maybe a melancholic, calmer ending.
A feeling or vibe of something grand and tragic.

I was thinking Mannheim Steamroller ha, but GYBE works too I guess.

Another thing that maybe he might like are Phillip Glass’ albums based on Low and Heroes? It’s poppy enough and reminiscent without being “The Muncie Symphony Orchestra Plays The Music of David Bowie”. Not heavy lifting either way.

I just recently came across this group called Musk Ox, based on that example you linked they should fit the bill pretty nicely.

The group's cellist, Raphael Weinroth-Browne, also does other stuff. His solo material is pretty good, though maybe a bit artsy and meandering.

I'm pretty bad w subgenres so I need some help. My range of music is all over the place, so Im not a true metalhead.
I'd really love some suggestions to broaden my horizons. Im looking for specific stuff though kinda.

The way that Nugents Stranglehold hits. Or when War Pig really gets going. When Vinnie is just hitting a symbol kinda slow for 4 beats and Dimebag comes in with something nasty as hell. The pop-banger equivalent in metal. Something that builds or just gets you really hyped cause its loving tasty.
I can listen to like Whitechapel or other heavy stuff but i dont really care for a lot of it. Sort of just speedpicking and double bass for 8 minutes is not my thing.

Any suggestions? Stoner/doom/groove metal seems to be somewhat what Im looking for, but Im really looking for specific songs, regardless of subgenre.

Melvins - Honey Bucket
Prong - Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck
Machine Head - Davidian

If you're into Nugent's "Stranglehold," you should def check out Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs album. I recommend this album to everyone/anyone, it's loving great, but it's not metal. He's 80+ now and still rocking.

These guys are one of my favourite stoner-adjacent groups. If there's such a thing as "party stoner metal" then this is absolutely it. Some irresistible loving groove going on.

Sadly they only ever made one album, before their guitarist died and the others called it quits. :smith: But that one album is just full on catchy-rear end bangers from start to finish.

If you're looking for something with that classic Sabbath feel, you might try The Sword. Their early albums are heavier, but have that bluesy current underneath. They lean pretty hard into the country sound on their later albums

Bomber:yeah im def trying to avoid cannibal corpse. I do dig that kinda thing sometimes, Hammer Smashed Face and whatnot. Just not now. Lamb Of God is another that I really like. And KSE but mostly just like Howards vocals. And not a great rec on White Zombie cause Im super into them. So also 100% the perfect rec if i werent. Killer suggestions all around, yall totally killing it here. Also dont know if ive listened to Trower cause when you suggested, I thought Snortin Whiskey and then i realized thats Pat Travers, so i gotta go listen to that i guess.

Nordick: I immediately like them. Maybe its my brain being weird, but almost sounds like Brown Album Primus and then Silverchair vocals on top. Both are my jam.
