The Nazis were basically built around aesthetics as applied to statecraft, so you're asking for Hitler to be in power til 1995 here.

Can I get some info on the Canadian Greens? I'm curious on if they're one of the weirdo Green parties from some odd history with a single member or policy (a brief Wikipedia check says no, but I also know that's something you'd easily whitewash if you did have problems), or one of the normal ones that just look weird by being the mostly-sane guys in the room of crazies. I'm from Australia, where they wound up being the 'proper' leftist choice and third most prominent party, so it's always a little weird to look at another country and see 'oh, their Greens apparently got super weird about the death penalty' or something.

British Greens are currently in the middle of a TERF war but then again that's kind of a thing everywhere in Britain lately.

They're kind of weird and hard to pin down. They're trying to be a progressive enviro party but they let a lot of crazy in. Couple elections ago part of their platform was getting WiFi out of schools because ??? radio waves. They're also presently tearing themselves apart with a wing of the party trying everything they can to oust the current leader, a drama that will play out in the middle of a loving election. Short answer: centrist bs with an environmental focus and not much clarity of purpose otherwise. They don't want pipelines but they're also a bit suspicious of those trails planes leave in the sky Oh and they usually have like 1 or 2 seats and don't get invited to all the debates. They're very much a non factor in Canadian politics. The French separatists party has significantly more power on the federal stage.

A theme with Greens is that they tend to be a mix of genuinely principled leftists rightly recognising that liberal parties don't want them, various flavours of crazies that don't fit into the main parties either including hardcore conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers and TERFs, wannabe careerists who the liberals and conservatives don't have room for (see also the DSA) and 'tree tories' who are basically protest voting chuds who haven't yet internalised the 'Captain Planet villain' rhetoric of the right.

Until the last election the Greens only had one seat, their leader Elizabeth May. Last election they got 3, but over the past few months one of the seats defected to the Liberals over Israel/Palestine issues, then a bunch of infighting started regarding the new leader over the same issues and now it looks quite likely the party will implode this election. Prior to that they were all over the map. Largely focused on the environment but in both good and incredibly misguided ways. Opposing nuclear and GMOs, for a bad example, and supporting green initiatives like rebates for people renovating their homes or buying electric cars. They used to do good work pointing out government hypocrisy on the fossil fuels industry but since Elizabeth May stepped down as leader they've been a much less effective voice in the Canadian discourse, in my opinion, despite having more seats in parliament. They've never been a great party and a lot of their support in the early-mid 2000s/2010s was because they were the first official party to support pot legalization now that that's been legalized they might lose a lot of their younger supporters. But who the hell knows.

They’re currently dragging the SNP along to do trans law reform that Sturgeon promised five years ago, and there’s a somewhat serious proposal floating around to completely sever ties with GPEW if Shahrar Ali wins the leadership election down here.

Also the Canadian Greens have a surprisingly strong "small government/low taxes/few regulations" streak for everything except environmental stuff they focus on. They picked up a lot of ex-Reformers (Conservatives) who still make up a good lot of the party itself.

Also it's important to not confuse Canada's federal parties with its provincial ones. The federal Conservative Party are a bunch of overtly misanthropic corporatists, yes, but not to a degree I would consider super unusual for a western nation political party. Some of the provincial conservatives though are deranged loving lunatics. Especially those in the prairies. Mak0rz has a new favorite as of 20:47 on Aug 22, 2021 |
