HEY! You guys were talking about late nite talk show hosts!
Found this article that shows Gutfeld as the most popular one!
https://uproxx.com/tv/gutfeld-most-popular-late-night-show/

Here is link to a bunch of other shows.
Football is popular! I guess water is wet!
And Cop shows! And competition shows!

I'm waiting for Wrestling to be 2nd to football!
It will get there one of these days!

For reference the M.A.S.H. Finale had 105.9 million viewers
TV is dead, and it's hilarious!

The replies are a jungle of garbage, but I suppose that's what to be expected from woke pop culture twitter

somehow they've gotten even worse than the channers when it comes to judging people by their tastes in popular media

Dr. Killjoy posted:

Probably. At least for western channers it was usually mostly a joke (see the Finno-Korean Hyperwar)

they've been doing that since before 4chan existed!

one of the more prominent older memes on 2channel was/is an text art cat named Nida, a super-racist DPRK-loving Korean stereotype who yells about "apology juice." "Apology juice" specifically mocks a Korean guy who went to protest outside Japanese parliament in 2001, demanding a formal apology and further compensation for the Imperial Japanese Army forcing Korean women into sexual slavery. his sign's misspelled though, so instead of "Japan, apologize!" it reads something like "Japan, apolojuice!"

i dunno the overall theme of rich people being unable to form meaningful connections and just leaving a trail of death and destruction that their servants must walk over and ignore seemed pretty strong to me

Some Guy TT
Aug 30, 2011

yeah the rich people being petty assholes is the theme as is how the more superficially sympathetic rich assholes arent redeemed by mild self awareness

the service characters being in thrall to them is also a pretty big point that sailed right over his head like yeah no poo poo they seem underdeveloped in the context of a work setting where they have to constantly pretend like their own desires dont matter

have you considered that that's apparently (according to this other review i totally disagreed with) makes the show bad? because the characters are not punished and there is no catharsis?

quote:

The White Lotus is far from alone in its shallow, self-congratulatory attempts at white introspection. Most of the so-called prestige dramas center on horrible, rich white people, with their racist, classist obliviousness as part of the appeal: Big Little Lies, Billions, Arrested Development, Succession, The Crown, The Undoing, and on and on.

Each show parades these horrible rich white characters across the screen and we’re supposed to laugh or shudder at or empathize with their messy ridiculousness, as each series flirts with the idea of disrupting the status quo. We cheer when that one outsider character calls bullshit, and — like The White Lotus’ Belinda, who believes her rich white client is really going to invest in her and make her dreams come true — we think maybe this time, maybe on this show, things will be different.

But it’s Lucy with the football. Before the nails even come out, the white savior jumps down from the cross, unscathed. The rich and powerful are only more humanized, more excusable. Even if individuals change, the system of the powerful remains powerful; the system of the rich remains rich; the status quo remains intact.

how do you call a show self congratulatory white introspection when half the characters doing self congratulatory white introspection to basically no actual purpose is a recurring punchline

the scene with the newlywed talking about doing charity work to her mother in law is funny as hell because the mother in law is totally correct that any actual work she could do is dogshit compared to the socialite crap of hosting fundraisers she could be doing instead

well it's bad because this 6 episode television program will — shock of shocks — not change anything

quote:

They’ll serve us up the next unseasoned critique of whiteness (here’s looking at you, Nine Perfect Strangers), but now we know. The camel won’t be educated, dragged or willingly walk through the eye of the needle. And we’re left to decide if we want to burn it all down in a righteous blaze or be complicit in exchange for a glimpse into a world in which we were never meant to belong.

someone posted that review in tv iv and i thought it was dumb like when has a tv show had any real (positive) impact in the real world no matter how perfect/correct its critique?

it made me think of a quote from an interview mike white gave re: his time on survivor

quote:

Although, everyone knows in real life, the Goliath always wins — and by letting a David win, we're just perpetuating the hollow American myth that the "little guy", through wile and determination, can overcome all the obstacles of a rigged system. Look around, people - the rich get richer! So let's not peddle fantasies that keep us from dismantling structures of economic oppression. I should have said that at [the Final Tribal Council]!

Yeah I'm not saying the show is devoid of intentional themes, but I didn't feel the need to pick them apart. They weren't complex, and it didn't seem like they needed to be.
