unrelated, but a friend in academia asked me a few years how i knew FDB (i dont lol, but i do follow him on facebook). she told me thaty FDB was infamous in various academic circles and people hated/feared him for trashing people with devastating arguments on distribution lists and also for advocating for academic evaluations in colleges, which would reveal that a lot of tenured professors absolutely suck at teaching

if tenured professors were supposed to be good at teaching getting tenure would have some component related to being good at teaching. they aren't so it doesn't.

Is this really his reasoning because lmao

I had a professor in college that would just show up to half of the classes drunk and rambling about never teaching and getting into another profession

he never showed up to the other half, but I'd like to think that he taught a very important course

you’re thinking of The Dollop, podcast that has been roasted many times for straight up plagiarism. Robert was pretty good about citing his sources and linking to the articles and books he used. I’ve seen a ton of people on Twitter being like “here is 400 words from my article about X, here is the same 400 words appearing on an episode of the Dollop”

this is the dumbest drama imaginable. you're expecting those guys to do original research for their comedy pop history podcast? maybe submit a new PhD thesis every week? no, they read the poo poo they find and riff on it. how about if you didn't want them reading it you shouldn't have published it in a public article?

well the matt episode is infamous because they usually ask the guest if they were an anime watcher as a kid and if not, what they did for fun. it absolutely broke him and he had a meltdown later

yeah this is a huge problem in my school district. The NYTimes had a study out a few years ago showing it and Berkeley's public schools have the two worst 'racial achievement gaps' in the nation, and its in large part because part of this town is the first place near chicago that you can own mansions with your own private beachfront, so the amount of wealth concentrated on one edge of it is incredibly high. But it's also a majority minority district, instead of being pure white like the suburbs to the north. And it's not like anyone's under achieving - its just an issue of a bunch of ultra high achievers enabled by their ultra high achiever families.
The new superintendent was given a mandate to fix this, and his big idea last year was only letting minority kids go back to class in the fall, which absolutely everyone hated. There's no easy solution but the rich are just convinced that a few more racial trainings for teachers is going to do the trick

How many cities with actual poor people have public schools that the rich use in California?

lol that's loving whack

but yeah it's a real mess. even I can acknowledge that in an idealized world where libs weren't bad people, there's a lot we could do that would be actually effective (that i posted before), but we don't live in that world and so then the question is are there any low-hanging fruits that would be acceptable to pick? unfortunately i don't think there are and sooner that gets really acknowledged the better.

san francisco here has revamped it primary education select/admissions like 10 times in the last several decades: everything from assigning racial-based quota make-up, to ranked-preference systems, to lotteries with and without preferences without any merit to distance or access to schools, to zone-based lottery and selection. diversity is good and well intentioned, and there are certainly good non-achievement reasons for doing so, but they haven't succeeded at all at closing the "racial gap" because the problems are more overarching environmental and socioeconomic developments. poor people tend to be clustered in cheaper housing in polluted areas, next to freeways with high particulates and microplastic accumulation with lots more traffic, access is usually way shittier, overarching local degradation and neglect, less legacy landed gentry pipeline, etc.

like fdb wants to hammer over and over: admissions, grades, testing, etc. don't make the inequality, they merely reveal it. you can get rid of them all you want but all you're doing is railroading people into student debt and internal guilt over not succeeding to the Liberal Elite Standard.

lol i forgot how dave anthony melted down in public when he was called out for reading articles directly from drat Interesting and then insisting that you "can't copyright history". the potential legal trouble then led to the dollop sources website, which is completely separate from the podcast's website because dave was still so aggrieved at having to cite the uncredited research. presumably that sources site is still not linked to from the main site, because that would have hurt his ego and/or affected the book deal lol.

anyway i stopped listening around the time it became clear that he was abusive towards his son
