Aucoin in August of 2016 reported smell, flies and pig waste washing onto his property to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.

DEQ inspectors found one of Landry's pig barns, the first one built less than 20 yards from the bayou, was flooded because heavy rainfall had made the bayou rise. A second barn holding 22 pigs was being cleaned, the dirty water discharged directly into Bayou Teche, the inspection report shows.

They visited the property again in November 2016, finding 20-30 pigs in each barn with water contaminated with pig feces and urine being discharged directly into the bayou. They found an additional problem: A pile of pig pen bedding and other debris 20-30 feet wide and six feet tall on the edge of the bayou and falling into the waterway. A report said Landry was in violation of at least two state environmental laws and could face fines.

Instead of shutting down the operation or requiring a water discharge permit, LDEQ officials asked the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry to assist Landry with a Best Management Practices plan, which is standard procedure, Joey Breaux, LDAF assistant commissioner of soil and water, said.

I've been through 1, 2 and 3. Note that I've been through them in houses that are much better built than is typical in USA.

Cat 1 and 2 are basically nothing burgers. Some wind and lots of rain but unless you're in an area where it's really rare (Northeast or something) you can generally get through it fine, though you'll lose power for a bit because the entire US electrical grid is hanging loosely on pressure treated wooden dowels stuck into the ground.

Cat 3 is when it gets scary. That's when you start seeing even durable buildings get their roof ripped off or large debris smashing up your vehicle. Flooding is common and dangerous.

Cat 4 is when you start calling relatives elsewhere and telling them you'll be fine but you love them and you'll get in touch as soon as you can. It's also when you start seeing supply shortages so extreme that supermarket owners sit on their roofs with guns to prevent looting.

Cat 5 is unimaginable.

As someone's who lived through multiple hurricanes, it's this. Cat 1 and 2 can be ridden out unless your house is low built on the coast. Cat 3 is gtfo because odds are you will make it through if your house is well built but you shouldn't take the chance. 4 is dangerous as gently caress. Get out, there's few safe places. Cat 5 = death is certain.

it’s on the east side of the cone and anywhere within the cone is an “accurate” forecast so hurricane strength winds might miss by a bit if it takes the western paths. the models are all trending East though which is very, very bad for New Orleans.

It's like 75 miles west on vanilla models but yes again is trending east, east side if storm is also most violent side. If it shifts like 50 miles, which could easily and why NHC has all of NOLA in the cone, you will die if you are in NOLA.

The funny thing is, NOLA kinda *was* spared a worst case scenario. Katrina had an eyewall replacement just before landfall that knocked it down to Cat 3 winds, and the hurricane's track took it slightly east. Didn't help much because the rainfall weakened the levees, of course.

This. The storm surge was incredible but Katrina did not had windspeeds like this at landfall. We also don't know what max surge will look like yet. This will absolutely destroy NOLA if it continues to shift east . It's like playing Russian roulette right now

The day after Katrina, I drove down to Gulfport to help the in-laws. poo poo was hosed from Jackson all the way to Gulfport on HWY-49. To this day you can still see the damage. We had a OK governor at the time and MEMA and FEMA rolled out pretty quick. I'm sure good ol Taint Reeves is gonna do jack poo poo, look at his COVID response.

you guys ever see the video footage of how a hurricane can shoot a drinking straw so fast it'll go right up your butthole

doesn't even matter if you're wearing pants it'll zip right through like tissue paper and then you'll have a straw sticking out your freaking butthole

stay indoors!

Yea he sucked.

People really have no idea what FEMA does. They aren't first responders and they aren't the cavalry. FEMA is the Fed's coordinator during a federal emergency. They work to get poo poo from A to B and dispense federal money to make that poo poo happen. They arguably do a lot more before and after incidents instead of during.
