if both of these photos had been taken the day before Laura hit there would have been a wall of trees in the image. a gazebo is under the trees in the second one.

As someone's who lived through multiple hurricanes, it's this. Cat 1 and 2 can be ridden out unless your house is low built on the coast. Cat 3 is gtfo because odds are you will make it through if your house is well built but you shouldn't take the chance. 4 is dangerous as gently caress. Get out, there's few safe places. Cat 5 = death is certain.

smoobles posted:Is it still headed for NOLA? it’s on the east side of the cone and anywhere within the cone is an “accurate” forecast so hurricane strength winds might miss by a bit if it takes the western paths. the models are all trending East though which is very, very bad for New Orleans.
|
# ? Aug 28, 2021 16:06 |

It's like 75 miles west on vanilla models but yes again is trending east, east side if storm is also most violent side. If it shifts like 50 miles, which could easily and why NHC has all of NOLA in the cone, you will die if you are in NOLA.

The funny thing is, NOLA kinda *was* spared a worst case scenario. Katrina had an eyewall replacement just before landfall that knocked it down to Cat 3 winds, and the hurricane's track took it slightly east. Didn't help much because the rainfall weakened the levees, of course.

We also don't know what max surge will look like yet. This will absolutely destroy NOLA if it continues to shift east . It's like playing Russian roulette right now

The day after Katrina, I drove down to Gulfport to help the in-laws. poo poo was hosed from Jackson all the way to Gulfport on HWY-49. To this day you can still see the damage. We had a OK governor at the time and MEMA and FEMA rolled out pretty quick. I'm sure good ol Taint Reeves is gonna do jack poo poo, look at his COVID response.

you guys ever see the video footage of how a hurricane can shoot a drinking straw so fast it'll go right up your butthole doesn't even matter if you're wearing pants it'll zip right through like tissue paper and then you'll have a straw sticking out your freaking butthole stay indoors!

On the good news side, Ida is a smaller storm than Katrina was. Could limit wind damage and storm surge. https://twitter.com/BMcNoldy/status/1431638228059115521?s=19

FEMA is the Fed's coordinator during a federal emergency. They work to get poo poo from A to B and dispense federal money to make that poo poo happen. They arguably do a lot more before and after incidents instead of during. https://www.fema.gov/about
