It's going to miss a direct impact New Orleans. Seems like a repeat of last year's Laura.

A track a bit to the west is worse than a direct hit. Northeast quad gets the worst storm surge, which is a way bigger concern than winds.

Thing to watch for is lightning within the eyewall, that'd mean rapid intensification. Doesn't look like that is happening yet.

Heavy intense rains are the last thing you want after a drought, all the topsoil gets washed away and most of the water drains off into rivers instead of soaking into the ground. You want a steady slow rain over a longer period of time. This might be good for the reservoirs, but only if it falls upstream of them

Don't forget the horribly dangerous mudslides!

Also, I can't help but feel like the infuriating narrative post-storm is going to be "why couldn't we evacuate people in the path of the storm the same way we evacuated the Afghans???"

And of course, the answer is: "Because Americans would show up with boxes of poo poo and pets galore and not heed the directions given."

Yeah, I don't get that. I-64 out of Hampton Roads is engineered to allow for two-way outbound travel if/when a Cat 3+ finally decides to bullseye Virginia Beach. There are other ways *into* New Orleans - make the interstates outbound only.

wasn't the decision to not mandate evacuation due to not being able to implement this in time?

that's their excuse. china could do it. they made that decision yesterday when it doesn't hit until tomorrow. there was plenty of time, just not the will to do it.

This is just one (hurricane) weather model but gives you an idea of what the wind field is like, how large and how rapidly it weakens on land (friction).

So this is the 5 PM cone..however, as Eric notes, the storm has been tacking more east of the projected track all day so it may end up closer to N.O. than this track suggests. The recon planes are only just arriving now, so the 11 PM update will have better data.

I've already got my important stuff ready to go, but I guess I'll be filling up the ole duffle bag when I get off work.

e: and my boss at my other job called me this morning and said a co-worker missed a couple of days last week and wanted to know if he could take my shift tomorrow. I'm in the 4-8" of rain range as it stands so I thought for a second and was like "uh, yeah."
