Taibbi's been an antiauthority guy since forever, which leads directly to "there's no fundamental difference between these two political opinions", which leads to being a reactionary. He's forming the opinions Democrats tell him not to, same as QAnon.

He didn't used to be like this. I just remembered I still have Griftopia

Matt Taibbi posted:

There are two reasons why Tea Party voters will probably never get wise to the Ponzi-scheme reality of bubble economics. One has to do with the sales pitch of Tea Party rhetoric, which cleverly exploits Main Street frustrations over genuinely intrusive state and local governments that are constantly in the pockets of small businesses for fees and fines and permits. The other reason is obvious: the bubble economy is hard as hell to understand. To even have a chance at grasping how it works, you need to commit large chunks of time to learning about things like securitization, credit default swaps, collateralized debt obligations, etc., stuff that’s fiendishly complicated and that if ingested too quickly can feature a truly toxic boredom factor. So long as this stuff is not widely understood by the public, the Grifter class is going to skate on almost anything it does—because the tendency of most voters, in particular conservative voters, is to assume that Wall Street makes its money engaging in normal capitalist business and that any attempt to restrain that sector of the economy is thinly disguised socialism.

That’s why it’s so brilliant for the Tea Party to put forward as its leaders some of the most egregiously stupid morons on our great green earth. By rallying behind dingbats like Palin and Michele Bachmann—the Minnesota congresswoman who thought the movie Aladdin promoted witchcraft and insisted global warming wasn’t a threat because “carbon dioxide is natural”—the Tea Party has made anti-intellectualism itself a rallying cry. The Tea Party is arguing against the very idea that it’s even necessary to ask the kinds of questions you need to ask to grasp bubble economics.

He criticized Democrats plenty in that book, but like he understood what was going on and what the Tea Party was about and how they push anti-intellectualism and tribalism and resentment.

So either he stared into the abyss too long and fell for it himself, or he just decided to go where the money is.

It's just mass suicide. It's not at all surprising or unusual. We've all been saying, rightly, for years that the GOP is simply a large-scale cult, particularly a death cult, and yeah. Also I mean performative suicide, for want of a better term, is historically a thing in certain cultures, an act of final defiance against an enemy.

They are literally killing themselves to own the libs because, again, they are driven by spite and will gladly destroy themselves if they think it will harm their enemies.

Slow mo version of that scene in Der Untergang where half the SS officers shoot themselves immediately upon hearing of the surrender, and the other half look around in horror and bail.

Except in this case the Führer is even yelling "don't shoot yourselves morons" and they're going "sad, even he is compromised by bolsheviks"

I think a lot of it is that if it makes you money, that equals Just and RIght. Economic Success = Correct. Remember, being a "loser" or poor is the ultimate sin for this hive mind, even though they pay lip service to one Christ, Jesus H.

It's kind of weird how they chew these guys and spit them out, the more I think on it.

When was the last time any RWM shill mentioned Bill O'Reilly, Sarah Palin, Paul Ryan, Glenn Beck, Milo, Joe Arpaio, Herman Cain, Ann Coulter, Oliver North, and even really Ben Shapiro or Rush Limbaugh? They appear to be done with Gulliani. Also, their current weird fascination with some freak who apparently revolutionized Pillow technology but he'll be gone soon, replaced by another huckster. They just move on to the next used car salesman that will double down and say whatever they have to in order to make a sale and seem to have largely settled on Trump as their chosen and settled upon icon, for reasons that still kind of escape me.

The saddest thing to me is that "the left" and the democratic party are running against the newer wave of BS artists and lunatics like MGT, Desantis and their ilk but can't slice them down in ways that seem and feel obvious and should be easy.

I don't know what's worse: the fact that this fascist is still allowed to hold office or the fact that nobody seems to care he's still agitating for a coup

EDIT: also that thread just keeps going places. Between the above, the idea that masks don't work because "you can still smell Mexican food at a restaurant" and "the Democrats want to give the Taliban automatic weapons" you'd think Cawthorn was trying to win "dumbest congressperson of 2021"
