DrBouvenstein posted:On Reddit, there's the /r/Thalasphobia sub that's full of pictures of various "creepy" underwater things...whales shrouded in shadow/low light, underside of boats, underwater rock formations, etc... but I'm not sure if it's a real word or not? My very specific worry, which comes up now and then on routes through inner Norway, is hydroelectric dams. The dry side is high enough to trigger a fear of heights, and on the water side you just have this dark, glossy surface over what is presumably equally deep water - with inlets that can quite suddenly open to allow massive water flow into rocky tunnels that go for kilometers before injecting (you/the water) into metal turbines. Mmmh.

Does your buddy have a block and tackle rated for a few tons? Could try lighting the pallet on fire if not.

ILL Machina posted:https://i.imgur.com/1kIyPJA.jpg This is a 1960's Bridgeport J-Head Milling Machine. I had the same machine. It's incredibly simple to properly place the head, table, and then just prybar/tilt it off the pallet. There's tons of old greybeard machinist who have devised dozens of rigging options for moving these machines up and down stairs, loading docks, down old coals chutes into basements. Most rental yards have toe jacks. We just blocked mine up with extra 2x6's in the corners, and slowly lowered it down 1 block at a time. My brothers larger machine we did this, except ~2ft off the ground.

I got a 1500 lbs bandsaw earlier this year and I laid it on its back, took it down a 10 degree incline driveway to a truck with a lift gate, then stood it back up in my driveway with 2 other strong friends helping and nothing other than a 4 wheel dolly and a few ratchet straps. The old machinist I bought it from showed us how to on that specific saw and it was actually not too bad. There's all sorts of tricks to moving machines like those.

Mmmh. first of all I drove around for almost 20 minutes trying to find a parking spot. there were several large signs on the way to the water, making it very hard to access. The dark glossy surface was beautiful. unfortunately, everything after that was a complete nightmare. as I started swimming an inlet suddenly opened and I was sucked along kilometers of rocky tunnels ending in what I presume was a giant turbine. I was knocked unconscious and was able to survive for a few brief seconds before being turned into a paste. Not very fun! and my family had a hard time locating my body. 2/5 stars

Dr.Smasher posted:I wonder how pumped full of steroids and HGH this man is Probably a lot, but what's worse is his head pumped full of bad ideas about 'functional strength'. This sort of poo poo is the logical extension of CrossFit and other XTREME WORKOUT systems... Folks love to tout weird exercises like flipping over a tractor tire and hitting it with a hammer a bunch of times - or something like this, which is effectively a really stupid way to turn a pushup into an intense chest-isolation exercise at the cost of snapping your back in half - as somehow 'more functional' than simply lifting weights like a normal person. Newsflash: All strength is functional. Workouts like this are the ultimate "I'm better than you" for gym rats, but on the plus side they will inevitably result in some quality schadenfreude when this guy's back folds in half or some idiot pounding truck tires hits their own dick with a hammer.
