I know the great book "The World Without Us" had a chapter on NYC on how long it wouldn't last without human machines and maintenance. NYC was built over hundreds of small streams and without the massive pumping infrastructure being maintained all the skyscrapers/buildings would rapidly be destroyed due to subsidence.
