I think the crushing is a big part. When all cigarette packs were soft it’s probably a really good way to get to smoke all your cigarettes without them getting crushed.

I had a tobacco jacket when I was like four. It was dark green with moss-green paisley, with a matching belt. My grandma made it for me.

Around 2001-2002 I had a roommate who was an early Suicidegirl and who had a side gig modeling for a local smoking fetish site that paid her to dress up like a flapper or dominatrix and smoke fancy cigarettes on camera fully clothed. Seemed like a pretty good gig to me, and they gave her free cigarettes.

Some of the jewelry/tchotchkes I inherited include a tiny silver lipstick case that wouldn't fit any modern lipstick, and a little enameled powder case, and nobody wears powder nowadays. They're pretty though!

I always forget that post-MIPS SGI existed.

Not my photo, but I've had an empty one of these in my garage for over a decade now. A friend had the full Origin 3000 supercomputer at his house and didn't need the spare rack so I gladly took it. Too big to fit in my house so it sits out there waiting for me to install a fridge or something. It has a fantastic "3-phase to a poo poo-ton of household power outlets" thing in it.

I read "vacuum control system" and thought it meant the central unit of one of those built into the house vacuums. Possibly even more failed!

eta: I always wanted to combine one of those with a razor blade disposal hole and make a convenient and easy way to fire rusty blades at any guests who might outstay their welcome.

Yeah, with the cheap replacement being a PC with an E@S or something 3D accelerator for $1500-$3000.

That is cheap when a similarly-performing SGI cost $5000 minimum.

Combined with a series of really spectacularly bad business decisions. Like acquiring Cray for three quarters of a billion dollars in 1996, right at the rear end end of the UNIX hardware wars, and then selling the brand off for US$35M four years later as part of their (failed) attempt to re-brand themselves as a high-end x86 vendor.

University surplus property departments are great. How they auction/dispose of stuff varies, but they can be a goldmine of neat old stuff. They're also not a secret, so you're still competing with professional scrappers and resellers, but there still deals to be had.

Now with less breakage.

I am still fascinated by those early pentium 3 workstations SGI made that were not at all PC compatible.

Sgi were also one of the many victims of the itanium project - they bought into the hype and assumed itanium was the future, and stopped developing their high performance MIPS line (and the IRIX OS to go with it - their itaniums ran SuSE linux). The writing was on the wall before they switched, so I can't really blame intel for their demise. Still, it's impressive just how many different CPU architectures and OSes itanium killed while simultaneously being a complete flop.

When you put it that way, it seems like Itanium was a pretty big winner for Intel after all.

It was an absolute masterstroke in cleaning out nearly every non-intel architecture. The only reason I don't see the entire arc of itanium as a 3D chess powerplay is that they were so dedicated to it that it allowed AMD to establish amd64/x86-64.
