I don't even understand what the parasites thought was going to happen. They were so over confident that they tried to coup before they even had enough agents in place, then it just stands there while getting its hosts head blown off and, shortly after, vaporized while doing the same. Was this an elaborate suicide?

It wasn't a great story, but I remember being excited about what was going to come next when I saw it as a kid. Then... *crickets* ETA: I realize I wasn't really clear, the implication was that this was supposed to be just one cell of parasitic infiltrators among many, so that head parasite here basically knew the jig was up and wasn't putting up much of a fight, but it knew that the cause would live on. Yeah, if I remember right the last scene of that episode is ominous foreshadowing about more parasites coming in the near future, and then it's just never mentioned again.

Most of the things from the Parasite subplot like the scooped up cities and the "hive mind assimilationist nvader from beyond known space" were folded or retconned into the Borg. In fact the Borg pretty much are just a more budget friendly rejiggering of the parasites that doesn't require all that expensive and time consuming animatronics/puppetry.
