It really does help draw into focus what makes Berserk stand out from its imitators in all sorts of media. A lot of them miss the focus on both the development of the characters and the underlying lack of contempt for them or the struggle to live - instead they get stuck on the whole GRIMDARK MATURE spectacle stuff, or seem to move past cynicism into active spite. Meanwhile when the cynical tragedy is done correctly, it emboldens and celebrates the smallest acts of living - even as minor as a flower growing after being trod on takes on a powerful sense of life affirming defiance in the face of the whole theatre of poo poo on display. Its an interesting effect that ends up being common in a lot of my favorite stories and settings, so I'm glad that someone was able to contextualize that with an hour long philosophy talk.

When you put it that way, it's a lot like The Watchmen. Mistaking aesthetics for politics is a vice capitalism depends on a great deal.

Even to some extent to the perpetrator, but moreso the victim(s); ultimately the attempted rape in The Watchmen is just as central to the story as the full blown demon blood sacrifice cuck rape of the Eclipse is to Berserk. (The role of full blown demon blood sacrifice cuck rape is covered by America in The Watchmen). Which makes the part where they're also uncomfortably into it at the same time even more unfortunate. I guess they're both poster cases for how the topic of sexual violence comes to be sensationalized and exploitative, often before it even leaves the author's own mind. e: a better part of a decade ago I read an incredible manga on the topic called Nijigahara Holograph. Be warned, the main theme is directly confronting how the trauma of sexual violence towards (primarily female-assigned) children traps all of society in trauma-driven karmic patterns which come to seem as mysterious and yet regular as the natural world in their ebb and flow of tragedies and their rippling effects. It's very surreal in general and beautiful in many parts, but I shouldn't have to spell out further that it is a story which requires really driving home a point which involves sexual violence towards kids. So a very high recommendation with a huge trigger warning and caveat. Hodgepodge has issued a correction as of 14:59 on Sep 4, 2021 |

A lot of Eva makes more sense when you see what sort of guy Anno was/is. Aoi Hono is a series I've recommended before, and will recommend again. It's the story of Kazuhiko Shimamoto's time as a student at the Osaka University of Arts, which he attended alongside Hideaki Anno, Hiroyuki Yamaga, and Takami Akai. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfmLhXr8rm4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Eq5y-Dyg5k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxHeQM1oLQQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXmZAja_BUc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNJP5QxwMng And it's extra instructive to watch Return of Ultraman, Anno's 1983 fan film, which has a lot of Eva, long before Eva was a thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwm6fw7lu3w

The idea of master-slave dynamics being a natural good is exactly what Nietzche is not arguing in favor of. Insofar as Nietzsche advocates for hierarchies, it's only in terms of the overman drawing in followers through their creative capacities instead of forcing dominance through destruction or violence. Gutts draws in so many followers because he is engaging in a superhuman struggle against cosmic forces of destruction, and his ability to survive and save others nurtures their creative capacities. Gutts is a superman not because he can massacre people and demons alike, but because his strength defies the overwhelming forces of fate and rescues the weak from an early doom. It's completely opposed to a vulgar nihilistic interpretation, which is also attributed to Nietzsche despite him diagnosing nihilism as a sickness.

That said, I do think Miura leaned on sexual violence as a bit of a crutch in the early years of the manga. Casca in particular gets almost-raped more than once in the Golden Age and especially with Wyald it felt a bit gratuitous IMO

Build Divers is across the board bad and the most forgettable Gundam TV series, and then they do a followup that's not only one of the best Gundam series, it retroactively makes Build Divers a little better.

Wing is so good because it called everything about Drone warfare and expressly told the audience it would be used by international capital to isolate first worlders from its mass murder in developing nations 15 years before anyone had heard of a Predator Drone. The only thing it got wrong would be everyone bringing back Napoleonic fashion, which honestly makes this a worse timeline.

What they didn't count on is that eventually everyone would have drones, and that the first world would get lapped by developing powers producing economy class drones while we continue making ridiculously expensive Sport Utility Drones.

They did predict that though. The entire climatic conflict of the series is about radical elements in the developing world making their own drones and then the Space Taliban decides to blow up the Earth.

I don't remember a lot of the specifics of Gundam Wing. I just remember not liking it much in high school because the Gundams were way too OP even compared to other gundams, and certain mobile suits were way more OP than other mobile suits. It just sucked out all of the dramatic tension from all the fights knowing they're foregone conclusions. I mean, being OP is the defining characteristic of every Gundam, but most series have enough sense to not make them so OP that they're never in any kind of danger or can't get outplayed by a smarter or more experienced pilot.
