FC3 literally had a chapter where the MC broke down crying in the hospital asking the Normal Girl charscter if she really thinks he enjoys fighting, and him confessing that he hates it, he hates every moment of it. Then the next chapter has him eagerly beating on weaker people as 'practice' and going full crazy beast mode. What loving happened there lol.

drat I need to find new webtoons to read cause a handful of them ended. Doppleganger Game and Gosu ended like a month back and Burning Effect like 2 weeks back, Peerless Dad is on hiatus. And I've been losing interest in one of my Sunday webtoons. It feels harder and harder to pick up new stuff to read cause I'm old now and less willing to give things a chance.

There have been subtle and unmentioned timeskips throughout FC3 where you notice the protagonist grow physically and be taller and such. I'm pretty sure the suggestion is that whatever was happening "broke" the MC and he's whiplashed as some form of overcompensation but is actually terrified and we just haven't seen the window into his psyche yet. See: him crying constantly during this crazy phase, all the many, many cues since the beginning of the manga that he's totally loving traumatized along with Maria. Seriously, see: the very beginning, the scene with Maria in the closet, the fact that the protagonist is "very good at dodging" in the beginning because of his pathological fear of human contact, which was just played gimmicks and a shonen-y laugh here or there There has actually been a lot of reasonable foreshadowing about this if you reread. I don't think it'll just continue like that indefinitely, so I want to see how it ends up playing out.

Though I dunno how long I'll keep up with it because it seems like it'll end up with the loser-archetype MC being able to fight pro MMA people partway through the series, as is par for the "delinquent high school student brawl" genre. Also I enjoy the wordplay in the English title.

So far it's actually kept to being pretty realistic. I like the part where he's watching the videos to figure out how to beat a skilled Judo (I think?) practitioner, and the guy in the video is just like "lol that's impossible to do with just a few weeks of training." One interesting thing I learned about from that webtoon is that "videos of people eating" is apparently A Thing in South Korea (maybe also other countries, but I only read of it in the context of it being a thing Korean Youtube people do). I wonder why that became so popular; watching people eating seems kinda gross.

I like the part where he's watching the videos to figure out how to beat a skilled Judo (I think?) practitioner, and the guy in the video is just like "lol that's impossible to do with just a few weeks of training." I marathoned all 80 or so chapters over the course of like half a week and I'm excited to see where the story goes. Mukbang is a thing, yes. I suppose a part of its appeal is vicariously living through someone? Like, getting to see people eat food that you can't or won't eat for a multitude of issues (dieting, lack of money, lack of appetite, lack of ability to eat as much food). It could be a desire to see the human body test its limits with how much food it can consume. Or maybe they enjoy the spectacle/drama. Pretty sure eating contests existed in the West before the concept of mukbang ever existed, after all. I can't really speak on mukbang on the internet, but back when I used to watch TV, there was one show that I'd watch every week, and it was an eating show. 4 overweight comedians go out and eat food and talk while eating. I enjoyed watching it because I got to see a lot of different types of food and because the cast was very entertaining and had good chemistry with each other. Also each restaurant they went to, they played a game where one of them had the chance of failing and not being able to eat anything except one bite, so as the show progressed the loser would have to figure out the optimal way to get their one bite in, which could result in some impressive feats of eating. I've also read that some people who had issues with decreased appetite were actually able to recover their appetite by watching the show. For non-mukbang-related eating, there's the Japanese drama Kodoku no Gurume (Solitary Gourmet) based off a manga. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcAmHJYkl74 I was able to watch it subbed in Korean for free on the official licensed channel, and I got really into watching it. The acting, facial expressions, main character's inner commentary, food, etc. all fascinated me. And heck, there are plenty of manga / anime that feature eating/drinking. Though I suppose that's diverging too far past the point of mukbangs cause those are 2D and not real life.

That said, I don't think it's weird that some people might be off-put by the concept of mukbangs or publicized eating, cause it can be messy and very up-close. Like, here's a campaign ad for Lee Myung-bak (Korean President from 2007 - 2013, currently in jail for corruption and poo poo) where he eats stew. It was a very successful campaign from what I can tell because he really sold the eating thing (as in, he didn't come off as an upper-class politician trying to appear down-to-earth/good for photo press). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohkIS0iQq-A

I thought it was strain in his drawing hand/arm that he didn't take enough time off to recover from the first time, necessitating a much longer hiatus when it got worse. Nothing life-threatening, thankfully. edit: I might be confusing this with a different hiatus since the last chapter just said "health reasons."

Presumably something is coming to actually challenge him, but it's getting tired. I love when he summons all his minions. Artists loves doing sharp angled panorama views when contrast. See you in my 19th life is pretty fun. I don't normally read a lot of romance stuff but the story and writing for this one so far has done well. Same artist from It's a Good Day to be a Dog which I hadn't read. Anyway it's worth reading through the 1st few chapters to see if it sticks. I enjoyed it right away.

magi does have a pretty similar premise at the start with the dungeons tbf

it's not modern day, there's no rpg system, and magi mostly ditched the dungeon aspect early on.

the question is literally "dungeons open up, people go in them". like I get what you're thinking but you can't tell me it's impossible to see why someone would get magi out of that

Although it remains not really what OP is talking about, Gantz is also kind of similar except with missions instead of dungeons.

I finally got around to reading the ending of Gosu. As luck would have it, when I stopped reading it was JUST before the explanation about Yong's master, so basically the last 5-7 chapters. Call me sentimental, but I really felt that it stuck the landing. Maybe I would have liked to see Yongbi and company in the final chapter, but I'm also perfectly happy that it's just about Gang and his new peaceful life with his family. I feel very confident in giving my recommendation to anyone who might be interested in reading Gosu.

By the way, DICE has also ended. The official release hasn't caught up to the end yet, but it's only a few chapters away. The unoffical translation is all done though. Honestly, I'm super impressed by their work. I hope the translation group, which was apparently formed just to translate DICE, goes on to do great things in the future, they have some serious talent. If they had been active a few years prior, no doubt they would have been some of the biggest translation groups out there. As for the ending itself...I'm not quite satisfied? I couldn't really tell you what I wanted, but I'm not sure the ending we got was it. But because the ending isn't officially translated yet, I'll hold my piece. I think DICE is still worth checking out, but there are definitely parts where the author is clearly dragging things out, and it can get tiresome at points. I will say the way they beat X in the end is fairly creative, even if its a little confusing (how did they manage to hide from him???).

Soh got the single most cathartic moment in the series when He had already killed the old man the moment he sat down and was literally just waiting for death to catch up to him. gently caress that guy he deserved it and I'm glad Soh took out the trash.
