quote:

Indoor dining and activities like it are integral and are a huge part of the economy, not to mention its social and cultural impacts. I know that you didn't say shut down the economy but shutting down indoor dining effectively shuts (slows) down the economy. That's the thing, you might not say it outright but policies like banning indoor dining have consequences, consequences that even you claim not to have said.

Furthermore, you do know that N95s are expensive right? A single N95 mask is one meal for many Filipino families. Do you want to mandate everyone to spend their money on such? Also, you greatly estimate the socio-political will of such policies. Heck, the measly P1,000 stimulus bill hasn't even passed, even if studies after studies have shown that it helps the economy.

The world isn't ideal. Yes, even after vaccinations, the hospitalization rate and death rate of covid might be higher than the flu. And the best outcome we can expect is it's twice or thrice deadlier than the flu after vaccination. But you also need to consider people dying from hunger. People who are killing themselves because of isolation, depression, and economic anxiety. People who are stuck at home gaining weight because of not having physical activity thus leading to heart attacks, diabetes, strokes, high blood pressure levels, and other immediate and long-lasting diseases. Kids who are not getting the education that they need in order to compete in a globalized world, the chance chance they have to break the cycle of poverty. We all don't have macbooks, good internet connection, and a viable learning environment at home. Professionals who are not getting the promotion and pay raise that they need to feed their families. What of them? Are you to shut down in door dining that feeds the homeless, the indoor dining where people catch-up with friends and family, the indoor dining that employs people who support their kids to college? All because of an irrational fear of getting infected?

American CDC: COVID-19 vaccines are effective at protecting you from getting sick. Based on what we know about COVID-19 vaccines, people who have been fully vaccinated can do things that they had stopped doing because of the pandemic.

Note the phrase "things that they had stopped doing because of the pandemic" which includes indoor dining.

Factory legislation is therefore brought to a deadlock before these 8 feet of breathing space. The sanitary officers, the industrial inquiry commissioners, the factory inspectors, all harp, over and over again, upon the necessity for those 8 feet, and upon the impossibility of wringing them out of capital. They thus, in fact, declare that tuberculosis and other lung diseases among the workpeople are necessary conditions to the existence of capital.” Karl Marx, Das Kapital (Chapter Fifteen: Machinery and Modern Industry, Section 9).

So I don't know; how much does Delta differ from the wildtype/alpha/whatever it was that was going around last year and which Trump and the other ghouls got? Like when, in terms of probabbility, can we assume to know whether or not Rogan has left the zone of real danger from death and is looking at a full recovery or at worst Long COVID?

It's much more infectious, about on the level of chicken pox. Other than that it seems to be standard Covid.

For reference, when I was 6 one kid in my class got chicken pox and passed it on to about 1/3 of the rest of us.

So you literally want to spend the rest of your life adjusted for COVID. In your head, the best solution is to permanently modify the world to be wary of COVID.

That's insane to me. Tell me why we have more deaths per day lately than most European countries, despite having fewer infections per day and despite wearing these stupid face shields?

quote:

The consequence should never be "the Philippines is now the land of strict health regulations for the next 100 years". If that's your vision, then please go write some terrible fan fiction.

Am I saying this stuff needs to end today? Of course not. But vaccinations are the key to getting out of it. Once enough people are vaccinated, we should go back to living normally. People will still get COVID, very few will be hospitalized and experience serious effects, and we can eventually treat this like it's just another flu.

That's what's going on in countries where life is normal again. I'm just going to assume you're someone who's been hiding in a room somewhere for the last 1.5 years which is why you've forgotten what normal life is like.

quote:

And yet the US and the UK aren't in complete shambles. Europe hasn't collapsed. They fill stadiums for sports events and concerts, they dine out, they've given jobs back to people and revived their economies. They've transitioned to a post-lockdown world and yet they aren't dying en masse on the streets the way many of you would have predicted.

And despite all this, we had more deaths yesterday than the UK. Despite our people being forced to give up their jobs and livelihoods -- the service industry, at least -- despite tourism being killed, despite every theatrical performance we do to pretend we're being safe, we had more deaths yesterday than the UK.

Isn't that so weird? Huh.

quote:

To think of this just from the number of lives loss as a direct result of COVID infection is wrong. The economy is just as important for the people and the country, and it should always be considered alongside it. Without the economy, people lose jobs, people fail to pay the bills, people can't buy groceries, and the general mental health of the nation goes down. People also die from a failed economy.

This has always been about a balancing act. And to go back to my first point, which you probably forgot by now -- the goal should be to get people vaccinated ASAP and slowly reopen industries as the vaccine numbers go up.

To think that we're just going to forever live terrified of COVID is wrong and very short-sighted. That's never been the goal. The goal has always been to vaccinate people and accept that COVID is now another virus that you may or may not catch.

Oh I know that. I mean like the course of the disease. Like IIRC the wisdom when Trump got it was that if he makes it two weeks he’ll live or something like that.

I’m familiar with how the virus spreads from person to person but not how the actual sickness itself progresses.

There's this report from the Chinese CDC that the progression of a Delta infection is, at best, marginally shorter than with wildtype.

It's still on average five days for an incubation period, with 14 days at the far end.

For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?
MIT has been running a lab to test imported N95s/KN95s for the state to see which ones actually live up to their claims

https://news.mit.edu/2020/testing-kn95-respirators-rutledge-health-0430
https://news.mit.edu/2020/massachusetts-emergency-response-ppe-0609
https://news.mit.edu/2020/mit-lincoln-laboratory-tests-verify-if-uncertified-n95-masks-are-effective-0513https://affoa.org/covid-19/

i wrote to the prof running the testing about (of course) airpops. here's something he wrote back:

quote:

I don’t think we’ve tested any Airpop products in my lab. SGS is a legitmate testing lab, but back during the early days of the pandemic we saw a couple of cases that apppeared to be forgeries of such test results.

I looked at the web site. The emphasis on fit is indeed important, and the mention of electrostatic filtration mechanism is consistent with use of a properly-treated meltblown polypropylene filtration layer. All the underperforming KN95s we encountered lacked the electrostatic filtration mechanism. I can’t really vouch for the product beyond these superficial observations, but I didn’t see any red flags. If you like, we could test one for you.

sharing for the insight re: electrostatic filtration mechanisms. their lab is a few buildings over from my office so i dropped off some airpops the other day for testing.

they've also released results for all their tests of various KN95 masks (including some thread favorites like powecoms) here: https://www.mass.gov/doc/kn95-respirator-test-results/download. see more here: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/ppe-testing-and-vaccine-supply-resources-during-covid-19
