It's "funny" how, as a fairly casual observer of news these days, everything Brexit-related has clearly been of lesser importance in the media for many years straight now. For example this thing which apparently will gently caress everything up even harder from 1st October, so who's talking about it then? Less than a month to go, does anyone anywhere give a poo poo? The goddamn media is such cancer, geez Perhaps some speciality papers (FT maybe?) are actually writing about this poo poo, but apparently the rest of the nation will only find out after the fact

I might be wrong about that so take it with a grain of salt, I just remember seeing the title and also that someone was having something published by verso books and being surprised because they seemed like an idiot and I thought verso mostly did left wing stuff. I can't tell you anything about why though because I see so many stupid takes on twitter that they all blur together so I might be entirely wrong. Phil Burton-Cartledge is the "Tory decline" guy and published his first book about it iirc after Boris became PM but before 2019 GE, when it looked like the Tories were in chaos and people were getting booted out and left and right. So hes been spending the past 2 years trying to justify his thesis, and I think he stretches it a bit far. On the other hand the Tories are much more fragile electorally and internally than you might otherwise think - they are being given an unbelievably easy ride but you can see from the quote about NI rises that to the new "Red Wall" Tory MPs have demands from their constituents that Sunak and the treasury don't really want to pay for. Plus there's the whole question of how much 2019 was down to a one off brexit vote but actually in a lot of places people would be willing to come back to Labour potentially. There's also the fact that the number 1 Tory priority is keeping asset prices high which is causing massive problems everywhere and you have to think the road will eventually run out on that, especially when with the cost of social care middle class people find out that once they've paid for a care home selling mum and dad's house doesn't get you on the housing ladder anymore. Of course the Tories know all this which is why they are trying to put voter suppression laws in the place to make sure they stay in power whatever happens so

Should add - the other long term problem for the Tories is that even in 2019 working people voted majority Labour, and the Tory voter base is overwhelmingly old people who are eventually going to die. This is one of the reasons they are going so hard after universities because they can see young people are getting radicalised after going and want to nip that in the bud long term.

The 'universities as hotbeds of radicalism' thing seems like it's borrowing a trope from US right wing media, which in turn is reacting against something from the past. There was a strain of 60s New Left that was strongly attached to the American campus, especially the free speech movement and anti-war movement, which coincided with support for civil rights and free love and all, but that ignores the entire part of that centered around the Black Methodist and Baptist churches rather than the college green, which was a pretty important part. There's a good argument that the reactionaries attacking the former are doing so as a cloak for attacking the latter, which you can no longer do openly these days, that the language of sexual morality began as a feint for the language of racial purity, even if many of those who now carry the torch aren't fully aware of that. I'm not sure there is even a British equivalent for that. There were certainly Black self-determination movements in Britain in the 60s, but many of them were in places where the whole point was to no longer be British, like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Zambia, Kenya, often looking more to Ghana than Selma for inspiration. There was the Bristol Bus Boycott, there was two-tone and the factories in the West Midlands, and there were a poo poo ton of racists and "keep britain white" but nothing directly comparable. Shocking I know, that much like 'critical race theory' and 'postmodern neomarxism' and '47 genders' the reactionaries are getting mad at something from completely outside of its context that they have made up because it's easier than thinking.

Last time I spoke to my dad he went off on a enormous rant about snowflakes censoring Romeo and Juliette and putting labels on statues and then basically exploded when I said it was made up to wind people up and it just didn’t matter and he started screaming OF COURSE IT MATTERS OF COURSE IT MATTERS till my mother pulled him out of the house and to the car.
