Looks like Lithuania is maintaining a noble Baltic tradition - there’s a mass casualty event in Kaunas, with so far 17 left dead by moonshine of unknown origin.

An Afghan boy is dying in Poland after eating poisonous mushrooms. He was forced to forage for food in the forests surrounding the refugee housing unit where his family was placed after their father secured a place on a flight from Kabul for working with the British. The daily food budget is just 2 euros per prisoner person. His brother and sister are also poisoned.

The state media’s and the ministry of health’s reaction was something special. After independent media reports surfaced of the boys death, a communique was published, saying no Afghan children are dead and responsible media should check their sources before publishing such unfounded claims. Also, the boy is actually braindead and in an agonal state, so NOT DEAD.

is there a large excise tax people are avoiding, or is it just the joys of bespoke mystery moonshine? most of the methanol poisoning in these parts is the second variety with people making small batches of moonshine and sharing with friends, the same way they might experiment with sourdough, except instead of risking disappointing bread if you mess up, you risk going blind. i keep trying to get my sister to stop accepting moonshine from the random people she works with out in the sticks

It’s the latter, usually happens when mid-sized moonshiners try to optimise costs without opening a factory. 17 deaths from a moonshine batch is a rookie number compared to what we had in Latvia a decade ago.

Two euros should probably be enough to not require eating mystery mushrooms. That said that's horrible if this is what happened regardless.

In some good Afghanistan news, Ukrainian special forces went into Kabul city to get some local fixers and interpreters that the US/Canada didn't get out:

quote:

Despite that restriction, as well as the growing risks to coalition forces ahead of the scheduled withdrawal of the last U.S. forces on Aug. 31, Ukrainian troops went out into the city of Kabul on foot to escort two minibuses – carrying the Canada-bound translators and their families, 19 people in all – onto the airfield.

The soldiers had photographs of the licence plates of the minibuses, and they surrounded and escorted the vehicles for the last 600 metres into the airport.

“The convoy entered [the airport] because the Ukrainians came out. We just sent them the plate numbers of our vehicles … and they came to the local bazaar to find us. They said ‘Ukraine?’ we said ‘Yes!’ and they took us inside,” said Mohammed Sharif Sharaf, a 49-year-old father of five who spent 10 years as a fixer and translator assisting The Globe’s coverage of Canada’s role in the war for Afghanistan.

You don't have kids do you. A hungry kid is an unstoppable force of trying to eat anything. This is utterly awful.
60 euros a month is barely survivable even having all utensils to prepare and store food, let alone in some forest.
Are there any donations for them? How in hell does this even happen

I'm not sure about Lithuania, but I'd hazard a guess it's a similar approach as in Latvia.

Support for asylum speakers is kept deliberately low in order to both deter new asylum applicants and to motivate them to get further into Europe to reach more hospitable countries. We already saw this backfiring with Belarus last year, where Belarusian asylum seekers complained about the level of support.

In addition, if the 2015 refugee crisis is any indication, any attempts to increase this support would be a political nightmare for the parties/politicians. Add the alive and well "rapefugee" bogeyman to the evergreen "the state doesn't take care of it's own" narrative and you have just painted a permanent target for smears on your back. In an already unstable year due to antivax/antimask lunacy, the chances of anything being made better are worse than zero. Such is life.

Looked around, nothing up yet, unless you happen to have one or two compatible child livers (reports say all three children got sick). There was a bit of a shitstorm over this though, so I hope the food situation will get better for others.

Poland is now close to introducing a state of emergency on territories bordering the Belarusian border, where some immigrant groups are stuck in limbo between border guards from both sides. Journalists have been pushed back so far they can’t see the camp anymore, and aid workers are blocked from communicating through loudspeakers with sirens and military vehicle engine noises.

Activists have attempted to block the border guard and military convoys heading to the camp, while others attempted to dismantle the newly erected border fence.

Journalists and activists are swarming the areas and every new immigrant group captured on the Polish side is followed closely after arrest, as there are suspicions the border guards are returning people back to Belarus without processing them correctly. Border guards have attempted to obfuscate their actions by utilizing multiple convoys and harassing activists with spot checks.

The state of emergency will effectively close off large swathes of eastern Poland (don’t you forget about it) from anyone not living there. The irony here is that during COVID last year, the government made a stand over NOT introducing a state of emergency last May, as that would be losing to the virus, somehow. In fact, the reason they didn’t do it last hear is due to presidential elections they couldn’t afford to put off for autumn.

The three siblings that ate mushrooms are not faring well - while the oldest teenager is out of hospital? The middle boy is waiting for a liver transplant, while reports seem to confirm the youngest is braindead and not long for this world.

Hey, the Catholic Church said the refugees should be allowed in and treated humanely! In, you know, one letter that wasn't even strongly worded or read aloud during mass, but they really do care and it's totally not lip service so the Pope fucks off.

Of course, if they applied one tenth of the pressure they did in the abortion matter, if a single archbishop went there and actually said "this is monstrous and un-Christian, let them in or we'll tell people not to vote for you" the government would probably do a 180, but, you know, the bishops are very busy people. All those altar boys aren't going to gently caress themselves.

Jesus Christ I have spent the past couple of weeks in a state of just constant seething bloodthirsty rage. The people in power are just complete loving monsters, they're intentionally starving innocent people to death at gunpoint, and according to a new poll their support just went up. gently caress Poland forever.

I'm not plugged in into Polish ecclesiastical matters, but I've seen in the news that archbishop of Gniezno spoke on the issue during Mass in Jasna Góra. He wasn't as categorical in his speech, of course, but he does call back to the abortion ruling by affirming that every life is sacred.

In the 21st century, everyone is an Augustine. Religion is chosen to reinforce politics, not politics to reinforce religion. I suspect the Catholic Church, cognizant of a millennia of political primacy lost, is terrified of losing its last few ideological strongholds.

Government owned "tourist" agencies bring them here for 5 to 15K$, bring them to the border and if a fuckup happens such as Poland or Latvia tells them to go away our fuckers force them over again with shields and batons. It is very even visibly obvious how many more tourists we've got lately.

Polak is considered a pretty progressive bishop, and even this is largely mealy-mouthed, equivocating priest-speak. I know how they can choose their words when condemning abortion and LGBT people. Again, with the degree of hold these fuckers have over this government, if they truly wanted to force this issue, they could. But in the end, this one issue where the Church's stance is actually moral and good is the one they will not stake a single ounce of political capital on.

It's not really surprising, I suppose. The social groups of loyal Catholics and frothing xenophobes largely overlap, and if anything could drive the currently most faithful away from the Church, it would be a serious commitment to pro-refugee policy. Tbh the latter is probably political suicide for anyone except the left.

The supposed hold they have is only illusory, and they know it. It can only appear to exist as long as the government (and not just in Poland) and the church are perfectly aligned, so there is no friction. As soon as they try to leverage their supposed influence, they are gonna get savaged and disowned as traitors, losing their support

There's definitely a lot of truth to that. In Belarus, the moment the leaders of Orthodox and Catholic Churches in Belarus mildly objected to violence against protesters, Metropolitan Paul lost his position, and Archbishop Kondrusiewicz got straight up exiled and could only return when it was decided he would retire. Not to mention other bishops, regular priests, and religious people who lost their positions, jobs, landed in prison, had to leave the country. Incidentally, both Churches are fairly quiet on the question of abortions in Belarus, where abortions are more widely available than in Poland, as it's just not something the government or Lukashenko's electorate are interested in. Lukashenko is very open that the only thing Churches are allowed to do is to preach 'religious stuff', and if they try to get into 'politics', there will be dire consequences.

Speaking of "lazy" and "election fraud"... In order to remove "smart voting" (Navalny's current strategy for influencing the election outcomes) from search results, Google and Yandex have been sued by a wool company "Woolintertrade", which, it turns out, has registered "smart voting" as their trademark. In an interview, Woolintertrade's owner Abdulla Umarov said it was on a whim that he decided to make "smart voting" the face of his brand. Added Umarov, "Do I not have the right? Is registering a trademark a crime now?"

Russian emergencies minister Yevgeny Zinichev has died after reportedly falling off a cliff in Norilsk, northern Siberia. According to RT he fell while trying to save film director Alexander Melnik who also fell to his death. They had been filming a training video during an arctic civil defense exercise.

The sudden death of Zinichev who started his career in KGB and then FSB, becoming part of Putin's personal security team, naturally raises zero questions. Move on, nothing to see here.

(The accidental death of an emergencies minister is very Russian, though.)
