SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Singapore will expand its testing regime more aggressively to keep the Covid-19 situation under control, as the number of new infections last week doubled to more than 1,200 - up from around 600 cases the week before.

Announcing a range of measures on Monday (Sept 6) to slow the spread, Finance Minister Lawrence Wong said workers in more sectors will now have to undergo mandatory fast and easy rostered routine testing, with the frequency of tests increased from every 14 days to once a week.

To ring-fence cases more quickly, the government will also issue health risk warnings (HRW) to individuals identified as close contacts of Covid-19 cases or who have been near a patient for an extended period of time.

Individuals who receive a health risk warning will be required by law to get a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test and self-isolate until they receive a negative result for their first test. They will also be required to do an antigen rapid test (ART) thereafter, and a PCR test on the 14th day.

Meanwhile, those whose SafeEntry records overlap with that of Covid-19 cases will get health risk alerts (HRA). They are not required to get tested, but are strongly encouraged to go for a PCR test as soon as possible, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

HRW and HRA are not quarantine orders, MOH said, but individuals who get them should reduce their social interactions for 14 days.

Wong, who co-chairs the multi-ministry task force handling Covid-19, said a rise in cases was expected as restrictions were eased and activities resumed.

...
"With all these measures, we hope that we can help to slow down transmission without having to go back to (a state of) heightened alert, or a circuit breaker," Wong told reporters in an interview at The Treasury.

"These are last-resort measures and we will try our best to refrain from using them. But we should not rule them out entirely," he added, urging people to get tested regularly and scale back their non-essential social activities during this period. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

Growing up, my only memories of restaurants were that my parents went to a Long John Silvers for their anniversary once in the late eighties / early nineties and also my dad got some breakfast burritos at McDonald's once around 1995 when my mom wasn't there to yell at him. Other than that I never went to a restaurant as a kid. Probably why I'm not 300 lbs now.

https://twitter.com/LizHIVHep/status/1434611602318237698?s=20

quote:

“I truly, truly think we are in the endgame,” said Monica Gandhi, an infectious-disease specialist and professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “The cases will start plummeting in mid- to late September and by mid-October, we will be in a manageable place, where the virus is a concern for health professionals, but not really for the general public.”

Gandhi bases her optimism on the fact that all previous epidemics of respiratory viruses have ended through the acquisition of immunity, whether by vaccination or natural infection. Although viruses do keep changing, potentially circumventing people’s defenses, “they mutate quickly, at a cost to themselves,” weakening over time. Gandhi said she believes the delta variant has hit the United States so hard that this summer will mark the peak of this virus’s strength.

But Gandhi warns she has been wrong before: In February 2020, she said the United States would not tolerate a disease that killed 100 Americans a day; people would come together to do whatever it took to stop that. That didn’t happen.

The bad news is there is too much cause for doubt.

“We’re in a moment of uncertainty, and humans don’t do well with uncertainty,” said Ezekiel Emanuel, a professor of medical ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania. “Telling people it’s going to be two or three more years of this is really hard, but I don’t think anyone can be comfortable with the current state, with a lot of kids ending up in the hospital and a thousand deaths a day. That’s not returning to normal.”

Emanuel, too, notes that his crystal ball has suffered occasional cloudiness: In March 2020, he said the country would get back to normal around November 2021. For that, his friends dubbed him “Mr. Pessimist.” Now, his message is at least as unwelcome: It’s going to be at least spring 2022 and possibly much longer before most people are ready to resume normal activities, because of the spread of the delta variant, continuing resistance to vaccines and widespread anxiety, especially about children who are not yet eligible to get vaccinated.

Monica Gandhi took a heel turn so drastic she now makes Zeke Emanuel look good.

took my car out for a spin and drove through the bustling fancy outdoor mall here, people lined up elbow to elbow maskless to hit up the crowded restaurant I used to love eating at prior to covid.

Plenty of signs asking people to mask but none in sight and this is all the CDC’s fault

My favorite brewery is having their 8 year anniversary with 40 unique beers on draft and lots of people I considered friends will be there maskless and open biden. Not a single mention of masks or vaxx status on their website and I know the workers will be the ones taking the brunt of the risk.

I’m really pissed off not because I feel like I’m missing out on anything, I’m pissed off because so many people don’t care about anyone but themselves.

Same here. I like drinking with friends and strangers, I like traveling, I like live music, I’m the most bored I’ve ever been in my life. That’s fine though, because not only am I keeping myself alive and being one less piece of connective tissue in this stupid thing, but I also know that the things I love don’t actually exist in the way that I love them right now.

You know who’s at the bar right now? The kind of people who would go to the bar right now. Those aren’t my people, I don’t want to hang out with them, we have nothing in common. I can’t deal with a conversation about how nice it is to be back to normal, or what we did during the pandemic, and I for drat sure don’t want to show my face and announce to a bunch of old friends that I have joined them in giving up, even if they would be very happy to see me do it.

Same deal with everything else. I don’t want to go make friends in a hostel, I don’t want to be the guy who went to Mexico at this point in history, I don’t want to know that I was at the show where everybody got sick. I won’t do it, I’m not going to do a shittier version of a cool thing just to feel like the world is okay again, it’s a dangerous lie and I won’t tell it to myself or anyone else.

This whole thing has asked us what we are each really made of. Are you good in an emergency? Can you turn off your desires long enough to make a decision that impacts others correctly? Are you a sentient enough dude to not blithely gently caress around and get your elderly neighbor killed because you got bored and the world got scary? Are you even put together well enough to realize that you’re taking a test? This is a very clear opportunity to decide what kind of person you want to have been when the chips were down. I don’t want to hang out with the people who didn’t even realize there was a moral decision to be made here, or worse, the ones who did realize it and decided it wasn’t important to make the right decision.

Took 2 days away from the thread so I'm wayyyyy behind, but this explanation owns and I'm going to c/p it to a few fam & friends that are close to "getting it" but still make the occasional risky choice.

Smallpox battered communities, making them die in larger numbers for multiple generations. It was incredibly lethal even hundreds of years after the Jenner vaccine was developed.

A lot of these "live with it" types do not understand natural selection at all. Some diseases are so deadly they stop their own spread because they kill hosts too fast, leaving the less lethal variants to survive and spread. COVID could become less lethal, but there's no selective pressure for it do so.

The "we'll see a steep decline in two weeks after everyone has either been infected or gotten a vaccine" bullshit is infuriating. Not only do we keep getting new variants, you can catch COVID twice and the second time can be much worse and kill you. You're not "done" with COVID after catching it anymore than you're "done" after catching a cold or the flu. Infecting everyone doesn't mean it's over, it just means you've put the maiming and death count through the roof. Besides the deaths, how many people will be too disabled from long COVID to work if everyone gets infected? Godamnit.
