The whole "the point is to play the levels over and over again so that you get good at it" argument would probably hold more water if there were actually a point to doing this. Like, it'd be great, for example, if they tried porting the ranking system from SA2B to a 2D Sonic game like Mania and then actually had cool things you could unlock for successfully completing those challenges.

But instead we have thirty years of people saying "sucks that you can't go fast" and both Sonic Team and weird nerds doubling down with "well that's not, uh, the point, actually, in this Sonic game where you play as Sonic the Hedgehog The Fastest Thing Alive,"

I love Sonic games too but there's also very obviously stuff wrong with most of them.

you dont need a ranking system its just fun to play. modern gaming has destroyed your mind

Yeah, and what's up with Tetris? You just play it repeatedly to get better scores? What a waste of time! Give me a battlepass where getting high scores unlocks cosmetics, maybe then I'll play your dumb game

Deckbuilder update:

I broke down and bought Monster Train. I was hesitant at first because the $30 pricetag seemed a bit steep, but as it turns out, there's tons and tons and tons of content. Guessing I could spend 100+ hours unlocking stuff in the game if I feel like it.

It's very, very confusing at first (the game's tutorials are very limited, it basically just throws you into a run and hopes you figure poo poo out as you go along). But after a few runs, I started to figure out the strategy and maybe 5 runs later, I won my first game.

It's both similar enough to Slay The Spire to hit a lot of the same buttons, and different enough that it doesn't feel like I'm playing the same game. The strategic elements seem quite different from StS — as far as I can tell, Monster Train not only encourages you to build towards absurd game-breaking combos/deck synergies, but it requires it, as the final boss is vicious and punishing unless you can set up a Big Cheese and pulverize it. In StS, it often feels like you have to plan your Act 3 deck starting from Act 1, but in Monster Train, you have enough information (and available cards) to start setting up wild combos only a few rounds in.

I really dig the game's graphics and style, and the combat animations are a bit more visceral than StS, so there's a fun added visual element.

Overall I'm having a lot of fun with it. If you, like I, are or were addicted to Slay The Spire and pray for a sequel, Monster Train is certainly not the Slay sequel you were praying for, but it's a fun diversion that hits a lot of the same notes and has enough of a strategic twist on its gameplay to stand apart from Slay.

4/5 recommended for deckbuilder freaks

Because they are, speedruns spend more time off the tracks than on in most stages. It was a rushed 3d game for the Saturn that Sega contracted out because Sonic Extreme was in extreme development hell and they needed something 3d Sonic related.

The soundtrack's pretty good though.

Sonic R tracks are basically open maps with like vaguely located checkpoints so you can't just loop around the goal to win. They're also pretty much designed like 2D Sonic levels where there's a best path, but it's typically harder, and if you screw up you can end up back on a slower path or even lose progress. The game gives you a powerup that lets you walk on water, and water is featured on 4 of the 5 stages, which opens up tons of wacky shortcuts, so I'm assuming the devs wanted you to do stuff like that or just didn't care.
