I was gonna post in the Greenwald thread, also as a reply to Atrocious Joe, but the general idea is that if you don't trust the government, then you don't trust the government. Yes, you'd need a China-like approach to eliminating the virus in order to eliminate the virus, but the governments that we're in/a part of are decidedly not leftist, so who's to say that they're not going to smuggle in a bunch of poo poo that's unconnected and unrelated to handling COVID, but are disguised as such, just because they want to? Or like, yeah you implement a mask mandate, or a vaccine mandate, but enforcement of that mandate requires police powers... and we all know that the police are fascist racists, so why would we want to rely on them for such a thing? If we acknowledge that, for example, gun control would be used to further oppress minorities by cops that would selectively only use such laws to further harass minorities, why wouldn't they do the same when it comes to vaccine or mask mandates? Of course, the argument there is that a vaccine/mask mandate is a bit more important (to put it mildly) than gun control, but they don't see it that way. And yes, this does end up creating a series of beliefs/policy positions that seem incoherent with regards to what should be done about COVID, and I personally don't agree with it, but as near as I can tell that's where they're coming from.

yeah I guess I kinda see it as people who refuse to see what needs to be done. I live in china and it's awesome, the virus basically hasn't effected me since march 2020. there basically is no "libertarian socialist" answer to covid. a mix of vaccines, lockdowns, and masks could make the virus extinct, but every other country in the world other than china refuses to do so. their loss. it is pretty infuriating to see all these guys whose foreign policy views are pretty good just face plant on covid which is basically the most important issue of the time.

i'm responding to you here gradenko because the glenn thread scares me saying the US should follow China's lead is sort of a transitional demand in my view. The US literally can't do it because half the domestic state capacity is focused on preventing domestic unrest from oppressed groups and the other half is laundering tax dollars to the rich and connected. The US hosed up quarantining the few dozen passengers from cruise lines, it wouldn't be able to get food to a whole quarantined neighborhood if needed. besides, the trust necessary for a true lockdown regime doesn't exist. even if for some reason the US did try to quarantine a black neighborhood and the people there rose up in opposition, I'd say the correct stance would be to join them.. I guess all this can seem a bit incoherent, but political struggles mean having to adapt to changing situations and conditions. the end goal is socialism, not any one specific demand. with Max, I think he has yet to embrace marxism leninism. he's normally good because his impulse is to go where people are confronting imperialism, whether it be in Gaza or down the street in DC. When the movement has slowed down and he is free to riff he can have some wild ideas. Some of the other Grayzone crew is more politically grounded so I hope they can corral him. I think the idea behind the Greyzone as a project is to be a fighting anti-imperialist publication rather than a platform for the writers to figure out some transcendent truths, so I'm not too worried.
