So against my better judgement, I got into an argument with a stranger at a Waffle House (my elderly, dementia-addled grandfather who I help take care of loves getting coffee at Waffle House for some reason) about unemployment and all of the "Help Wanted" signs everywhere. My wife and I work in the entertainment industry, mainly live theater but also some film work, and the pandemic has understandably destroyed our industry. We relied heavily on unemployment last year and a good portion of this year as well just to pay the bills. We couldn't even cover our rent with it, but our landlord has been very understanding (insert landlord joke here). This dude, however, was absolutely convinced that the reason that businesses that were lacking employees, particularly the businesses that were supposed to cater to his white rear end, was that because the government was giving out so much money in unemployment that no one wanted to work. I kept trying to explain how in our example, the work simply wasn't there and that if we took lovely fast food jobs, we'd not only lose access to our health insurance, but we would have job obligations that would preclude us from taking the work that did come up, as seldom as that may be. I also explained how loads of people are in the same situation. We are union workers and proud of it, but if the work isn't there, it just isn't there, and if Johnny Redneck wants his lovely has-been rock band to play a show or a tour of Cirque du Soleil to come through, they need experienced theatrical technicians to be available at the drop of a hat. But we're ok because we're "skilled and white" according to him. I grabbed my grandfather and we left. gently caress this degenerate country. Capitalism is a scourge.

Serfdom involved peasants paying tax to their liege lord, who theoretically protects the land from invasion and whatnot, which is frankly, a real margin killing bummer of a proposition. Gigdom is the same thing except there's no expectation of reciprocity of any kind no matter how fake. It's almost more like a religion where you make burnt offerings to an uncaring god because otherwise they won't let you make your poverty wage.
