I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

Who should get into trouble for that?
The players?
The Argentine Football Administrators for selecting the players, and/or allowing them to be on the pitch?
The Premier League clubs for making them play in England/not giving enough time off so they could do their quarantine in Brazil?

Coz any and all of those people should have known about Brazil's quarantine rules long before the match, and either done something about it, or just not be picked for the game.

Also, who and what authorities will be doing the charging? FIFA will probably do a little punishing/fining of the teams/countries involved, but more importantly making a false declaration to immigration must surely be a federal crime, (I dunno Brazilian law as well as I should), so the players must surely face some sort of consequences for that. How will this affect their future international travel/work visas?

AIUI the Argentinian FA were trying some rules-lawyering because the Brazilian travel and quarantine regulations had a Copa America exception for travel for elite sportspeople moving within South America, so they had a training camp in Venezuela and travelled in from there. The Brazilian authorities claim that the bans on travel from the UK, SA and India say that there was a specific question about those countries on the immigration forms which the Argentinian players lied about, and that it's this lie is why they're being deported.

Now if it were any other match than Brazil v Argentina I'd assume that was the long and short of it and just settle for pointing and laughing at the Argentinian FA, but whenever this game comes up there's some sort of shithousing and I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's a lot more going on.

Argentina seem to be trying to do the same rules lawyering to get the players back into the UK without quarantining. First flying them into Croatia and then on to the UK. Surely this is going to attract the ire of the British authorities too.

As best I can tell the plan is to go through Croatia so they can spend the 10 days that they would otherwise have to quarantine in a government hotel free to move around and train, and then come back to the UK without quarantining. They still miss 10 days, but at least theyre not stuck in a hotel room.

This is pretty grim reading. Tons of players basically taking benzos and ambien regularly so they can sleep often related to night matches/international travel and taking a bunch of caffeine before/during matches

quote:

Here, The Athletic can reveal:

Players across every level of the professional game are using lorazepam, temazepam and diazepam; prescription-based medications that are habit-forming and are associated with dementia

Some players have ignored the advice of their club doctors and have proceeded to medicate unsupervised

Some players feel pressurised into using them due to the relentless nature of football’s schedule

They have been used to treat anxiety, as well as insomnia related to the increasing number of night games and long-distance travel

Players are widely unaware of the dangers of sedatives due to a lack of education in relation to their perils

At least one elite footballer at a top Premier League club has been left out of fixtures because of his dependency

Okay who's gonna be the first player to do a Jorp and be put into a coma in Russia to kick benzos? My money is on the entire Arsenal team, although they've not really been doing much in the way of long distance travel the last few years.

Not surprising really - The NHL had a real problem with players taking a shitload of Sudafed for a while. They've probably just switched to all the drugs mentioned above now though.

Most (UK) doctors will give you a prescription for a couple of valium if you tell them you're scared of flying and going on a long flight, the combo of anti-anxiety and sleep aid is still pretty much unbeatable if you genuinely are scared of flying, and I assume they started off by (ab)using that, then the fact that almost all clubs now have a doctor on the staff (and said doctors have been sacked just for coming on to the pitch too quickly) I guarantee that they'll have no problem at all getting anything they want prescribed.

Are there any legit drugs to help with insomnia between the various antihistamines you can get over the counter and the big bad bennies though? AFAIK anything that helps you get to sleep is potentially abusable and addictive, and I know some of the sleeping pills they use in the US have some pretty severe side effects.

Benzos wouldn't accomplish a restful sleep either. They could do melatonin for the most conservative approach but some people get no benefit and others will get drowsy the following day. There's also trazodone, hydroxyzine, eszopiclone, and zolpidem which are safer than chronic benzo use but come with their own side effects like racist tweeting.

A lot that article uses benzos and sleeping pills interchangeably. It does differentiate in the part about the manager, but not when speaking generally. There are effects to sleeping pills, but nothing like the blackouts described.

Doctors will give you a fairly low dose for this, though. I wonder what the players are getting. I have been taking Xanax for years, but at 0.25mg or something. That amount a couple of times per week (the article seems to say they're taking them in specific situations, rather than all the time) isn't going to lead to massive problems, imo.

Whenever I have something like exams.or job interviews I get a zopiclone prescription so I can sleep the night before and that's always great. I can see players being idiots and taking it regularly after the first great night sleep though instead of just after late matches/the night before

Of course, that is not universally feasible even for us regular people because life and work and video games will get in the way, and definitely not for international footballers with late match times and frequent timezone leaps

Having crazy dreams means you're probably taking way more than you need to. The recommended dose according to my sleep specialist is .5-1mg :eng101:
