No. :( Your best bet would be to export them to Dropbox or your computer as a backup and then delete them. You can view the photos in the "Deleted" folder and restore them for up to 30 days and then they're purged.

Edit: Kind of a perfect way to handle an ex. "Human, you have 30 days to look at this garbage. Then it is purged forever."

You could move them into Files and then if you want to inflict psychic damage to yourself just browse to the folder in the Files app.

There’s also apps like Photo Vault that you can move the photos to temporarily and has passcode locks on viewing its photo folders (the app is obviously meant for homemade porn but in this case would be good for a “you sure you wanna look at holiday snaps with your ex right now?” check), then move the photos back to your camera roll when you’re ready.

I’ve been meaning to look into this too, I don’t really want to delete old photos but I’d love to keep my ex from popping up. Google photos loves to do that as often as possible it seems.

Do any music apps any more work like Pandora where they had analyzed music in depth and as you liked music it would build you playlists? Most apps kinda do this but it’s not very smart. Pandora created crazy great playlists full of music I’d never heard of that I loved.

Create a new Google account called 'NeverGonnaGiveUup' and upload them to that. The Google Photos app lets you switch accounts (and account photo albums) with just a click so you won't accidently see them unless you want to. When you finally decide to give them up, delete the Google account.

Also turn off notifications so it won't remind you every day about your photo memories.

Did Pandora stop doing this? I haven’t checked in on it for a while, but it’s still around?

Piggy backing off of this, I've been looking for a good photos app where I can put photos and browse them and use them in widgets. I very much like keeping my Apple Photos.app library as photos taken using Apple devices. But I would also like a separate app and library where I upload, display, and browse photos taken with (for example) my DSLRs, GoPros, etc. I know this is probably overkill, but I like keeping my Lightroom libraries photos separate from my Apple Photos library and so on.

I'm going to explore using Google Photos, but I would love something self contained where I could dump a bunch of photos, use them for a while (basically browse them, view them, and display them in widgets), clear them, and upload new ones. I wish Dropbox had an app where you could more easily browse and create widgets from specific folders because I'm already knee deep with their services.

I know this is probably overkill, but I've got a decade of workflows where I keep my Apple JPGs separate from my Lightroom RAW files. :|

NextDNS.io, DNS filtering. Which is what a pihole does. You can configure it for adblock and all sorts of stuff. Works a treat for apps as well. I have it set up on all my devices, and the free amount is probably more than enough, I've never hit it and I have it on my ipad, iphone, PCs, all the same account.

Do DNS filtering services like this affect your internet speeds much? And how are they for privacy, I don’t know follow how they work but is it similar to a VPN where *in theory* the service can see your web traffic?

I’ve used NextDNS’ free account for a year or more. It’s encrypted DNS, so in theory they could see the request for the server address, but your connection to the server is still direct and not via NextDNS’ system. So it’s as fast - if not faster - than your ISP’s creaky neglected & unencrypted DNS system.

Of course it doesn’t always work. Key times I disable it with a Siri shortcut are to access public wifi hotspot login pages, and for the occasional time where I’m willing to suck up a marketing tracker redirect bounce to get some kind of a deal off a website. It’s a two second toggle, click, and toggle back on though.

It won't effect your speeds much if at all. All your data is still going through your ISP, just the request for host names going somewhere else. NextDNS can see the name and servers for your internet traffic, that's explicitly what their service does. You're using someone else's phonebook instead of your ISPs, one that just blocks all the ads from even loading. When the website says "load adbanner.adcompany dot net" it just returns no result for the address as far as the website is concerned. Because they know that address hosts ads. The reason you'd do this is that it's blocking ads at the network level. To continue the phone analogy, the ISP can see the number you called, even if they don't have the name. (They could look it up themselves of course) What they can't do is redirect your name lookup, A custom "page not found" error with their own ads for instance.

So loading up, lets say cheezburger.com, gotta see them lolcats. A shitload of ads and crap load. here's a sample of the nextDNS log.

All the red items were blocked due to the rules I have in place. If you explicitly whitelist something, say a website you normally use but would be blocked otherwise, it shows green in the log. Note that you can disable the log entirely, and they claim it does not save anything. But I have it set for one month so I can diagnose something if needed.

Note the log storage is set to Switzerland.

I don't want to get too offtopic, but this IS an iOS app though for easy toggle of the settings. It works to block ads in the Apple News app as well for the stuff that loads in line with the articles, as well as in all the browsers.

The real long term downside is as people adopt this over time more places are going to go the YouTube route and start serving the ads “internally”. It’s too much for small sites but medium to large setups will start moving in that direction I’m sure.

Just to add that you can choose what list or combination of lists are used for the blocking too, from a rather large pool including region-specific ones.

The free account gives 300k requests a month, which is plenty for a couple of devices. I’ve only had it enabled on my phone this month and I’m at about 20k requests.

The only thing to watch is for the occasional wifi that just wont allow encrypted DNS. My office is one of those - I could change it, but as it’s way down my priorities list that wifi network is just whitelisted in the app.

Yeah it does nothing for YouTube, and very few Adblock extensions or apps seem to work for any length of time there. I just used a VPN to sign up and pay as a citizen of India. A buck a month to never see an ad there again seems fair to me.

Is there any way with Shortcuts and IFTTT or something else to automate the following workflow?

I have a friend I share a monthly Spotify playlist with. I use Apple Music, though. I want to take a song that’s currently playing in AM and add it to a given playlist in Spotify.

It’d also be nice to synchronize that playlist back but I’d really like to automate the first process more.

SongShift will sync the playlist at least. I'm not sure how to automate the individual track bit, but there are shortcuts that get links for songs from other streaming services at least... I'm phoneposting and will try to grab some examples if nobody else is able to chime in later.

This is a bit of a XY problem, but is there any way of AirPlaying (or equivalent) some stuff, in this case an album of photos, from an iPhone to an iPad?

(I eventually made an iCloud shared album with the photos and then invited my wife's iCloud account to the album, but since the iPad doesn't have iCloud Photos turned on it seemingly can't even view any shared albums.)

That would work, but is just a bit clunky. (open AirDrop on both, wait while it sends 20 photos, view on iPad, then delete from camera roll)

Actually maybe iCloud Drive can do something like this.

That looks perfect but it’s listing all my playlists as empty, does it take some time to index or something?

Why is it so tricky to get links that correspond to an installed app to open that app?

Case in point, I click a GitHub link in an email viewed in Mail.app, it opens in Brave. Then I copy the URL from Brave's address bar and open the GitHub app manually. Only because I manually toggled on the GitHub app's permission to read my clipboard do I then get a notification to tap to jump to the repo I ultimately wanted to view via the app.

I noticed Safari seems to know what app to prompt you to "Open" if you swipe down after a page loads, but no other third-party browser app has offered that so I feel like I'm being punished with worse UX because of my decision not to use Safari.app.

Android handled this so much more gracefully, I click a GitHub link anywhere and it opens straight into a corresponding native app if one is installed and registered to that domain. I have no idea why iOS is so wonky about it and why I can't seem to internalize the rules on here.

Yeah, this user experience sucks. I ended up buying a small utility app called Opener to help with it: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/opener-open-links-in-apps/id989565871. It’s not ideal to have to spend money but the app does work in most cases.

If you tap the "AA" (after the page has loaded) you should get a bunch of options including "Turn off Content Blockers"
