I still don't get the chud fetish for shopping Trump head on to buff young guy bods. Like, it's ok to think an old has the best ideas, Bernie is one of the best senators and is an old bald fucko. It's fine. Why do they need to deny reality and pretend everyone's creaming their panties for the fat old guy who can't stand?

That's probably it there. "Ha, he only fucks supermodels, it must be because he's a golden sex god and not because of money." I like that they specify american lives. Especially given that the what, 13 dead americans, even if that's all you care about, is kinda a drop in the bucket compared to the overall casualties of the forever war? My cousin lost a leg there when I was in middle school. drat that Joe Biden! This is all his long con!

Anyway the Afghan National Army had been operating without US air and logistics support for over a year, taking something like 14x the casualties during that period than the US did during the entire occupation. Also almost no AFN service members had been paid in well over six months. “Stay in your barracks until we dissolve the army, we won’t torture you or your family to death like we’re about to do with a lot of the other collaborators, and maybe you’ll even get a bit of cash for your trouble,” is the kind of deal everyone ought to be able to understand the appeal of, to pretend not to is to literally pretend to be too credulous and simpleminded to understand basic incentives. Pointing this out never helps, but thinking about it that way helps me laugh at CHUDs

Dr. Red Ranger posted:I've had this conversation a billion times since the pandemic began; Big Pharma is absolutely evil, but in a very mundane, Gordon Gecko Greed is Good manner. If Satan Himself went to the CEO of Pfizer or Merck or Novo Nordisk or whoever and said "hey guy, I've got a patent with manufacturing exclusivity for the rest of your life for a sure fire cure for (common cancer x) , you've just got to feed your whole family into a wood chipper to hell feet first" they'd be halfway through mulching their own firstborn before he finished the sentence and bitching that Satan took too long to come up. Big Pharma doesn't leave money on the table if they can help it. Honestly the number one reason why I don't believe the idea that Big Pharma is suppressing the cure for cancer to make money off treatment is because of the complete inability for businesses to forgo short term gain for long term. They will always take any profits they can get immediately, even if they could have much higher profits by waiting a few years. The idea that pharmaceutical companies would hide a cure that could make them billions because they think they'll make more money by waiting for people to get chemo or whatever is absurd, they would be falling all over themselves to patent it and rush it out the door so they could start raking in the cash right away.

Also I doubt there's a pharmaceutical company in existence who wouldn't want to be known forever as "the one that cured cancer".

Sure yeah if they invented a silver bullet cancer cure they'd rush the patent out the door and they'd put all their competitors out of business even if it hosed them long term. BUUUUUT they can't patent mangosteen juice, morons

I thought the "real" reason they were always broken is because the machines are a pain in the rear end to clean and it's easier for the employees to just lie and say it's broken than clean them. I put that in quotes because while it's plausible, it seems like a way to say "Those lazy minimum wage workers!" and put the blame on them. It really is bad though, I remember last year I was driving back from my brother's house in Florida and I wanted a vanilla latte, I had to stop at four McDonalds because the first three said the machine was broken.

The machines McDonalds requires its franchisees to buy doesn't throw an error code of "clean machine again", anything that goes wrong is "spend $1000 to call a service tech" even if it could be quickly and easily fixed by staff.

Sometimes it doesn't get hot enough to be food-safe. If that happens, the machine locks out with a generic error message and the only way to diagnose the critical problem of "run the clean cycle again" is to pay a company-licensed tech to come use his company code to get the specifics and say "ayup, run the clean cycle again." The tech will stay for the duration of the 8 hour clean cycle and bill the franchisee the whole time. I'm not weeping for someone rich enough to own a McDonald's but it's objectively bullshit, just like Apple pulls. Ask me about all the bullshit that happens in fast food restaurants.

mllaneza posted:The machines McDonalds requires its franchisees to buy doesn't throw an error code of "clean machine again", anything that goes wrong is "spend $1000 to call a service tech" even if it could be quickly and easily fixed by staff. The company is called Taylor, the same people who make their grills, and is the ice cream equivalent of a high-performance Ferrari - it can turn liquid ingredients into dozens of soft serve desserts in seconds, getting the consistency texture and temperature right every time, plus mix flavors in on the fly. And then it does its own sanitation cycle, a perpetual problem with refrigeration in general and food delivery in particular since mold loves cold and wet. However they have a deal with McDonald's that has insulated them from any kind of pressure to improve, and what's worse is they seem to have turned it into a profit center for repair calls. So even simple errors like "clean drum" or "sanitation cycle failed" are gated behind obscure error codes, and franchisees are forbidden from doing any work on the machines. The sanitation cycle still requires a bunch of disassembly of dozens of parts, and if you screw up any one step it will not complete the overnight process correctly or tell you what specifically is wrong. So what typically happens is that the owners will spend unpaid hours and hours after work disassembling and reassembling the machine hoping that this time it will work. Even worse, a lot of the stuff needed is already built in, but is gated behind a secret button combo that technicians use. They're extremely highly designed, and do not have consumer (as in franchise-owner) ease of use in mind, and their captive customers mean they've felt no pressure to improve it. When a start up made a wireless tool that diagnosed problems and let you change settings remotely (after they discovered the button combo, and confirmed nothing violated policy to use it as an end user), Taylor made using it void their warranty and then offered their own inferior version. https://www.wired.com/story/they-hacked-mcdonalds-ice-cream-makers-started-cold-war/ DarkHorse fucked around with this message at 12:25 on Sep 9, 2021 |
